In the opening match of tonight’s WWE SmackDown, a tag team bout pitting a new alliance against an established team.
Charlotte Flair teamed with Shotzi to take on Damage CTRL’s Bayley and the WWE Women’s Champion, IYO SKY.
On commentary throughout the match, there were numerous references to IYO SKY potentially having a run-in with the WWE Women’s World Champion, Rhea Ripley.
Specifically, Michael Cole made it a point to mention that SKY has been frustrated that she, as SmackDown’s WWE Women’s Champion, has been getting less attention than Raw’s WWE Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley.
While WWE could be setting up a champion versus champion match for the future (Survivor Series is two months away), another challenger emerged by the end of the match.
Just as it looked like they may have been about to win, Damage CTRL were distracted when Asuka popped up at ringside, snuck up behind Dakota Kai, and snatched IYO SKY’s WWE Women’s Championship belt, standing tall in the ring with the stolen belt until SKY confronted her.
This distraction led to Flair and Shotzi picking up the win with Shotzi scoring the pin over Bayley.
Asuka and SKY then pair had a face to face staredown, and later in a backstage interview, SKY confirmed she’d be happy to defend the title against Asuka soon.
