WWE ‘maybe currently’ wasting GUNTHER says John Cena, but it’s something that has seen before

Since going on a retirement streak, GUNTHER’s time in WWE after the Royal Rumble has arguably had less impact, with John Cena commenting.

This year’s Royal Rumble saw GUNTHER defeat AJ Styles, with the veteran star retiring. Prior to this, GUNTHER had brought the in-ring careers of Goldberg and John Cena to an end at Saturday Night’s Main Event in July and December, respectively.

It was highly unlikely that WWE creative would have GUNTHER retire veteran after veteran, but his recent storylines have been met with a belief among some sectors that he is being “wasted”, something John Cena recently addressed:

What John Cena said:

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, John Cena reflected on his retirement match with GUNTHER and the current position of the star, saying:

“I know there’s sentiment out there that like “man, they’re wasting GUNTHER.” Maybe currently they are, but I don’t see the view from the penthouse. I’m not in those meetings where they’re looking at the whiteboard and connecting the dots.”

Cena would be presented with the idea that “fans think in the moment” by Busted Open Radio host Dave LaGreca, something that could be true of the opinion of GUNTHER’s current run.

What’s GUNTHER been up to?

Butting heads with Nick Aldis, the SmackDown general manager, having defeated the star at SummerSlam in August.

He has been in action since, of course, with his most recent outing seeing CM Punk qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match.

That match saw GUNTHER declare that “it’s a disgrace that a wrestler of my caliber has to participate in a qualifier for a ladder climbing contest” during a backstage interview on SmackDown, only to come face to face with Danhausen.

Is Danhausen the right direction?

And, this may be the point of contention for some WWE fans, and GUNTHER fans in particular.

Back on August 28, GUNTHER and Danhausen met in a backstage segment that went exactly as one might expect when it comes to The Ring General and the quirky character.

They’ve encountered each other multiple times since, all with the same outcome for Danhausen, who appears undeterred in his quest to befriend GUNTHER.

It’s not clear how this would end, but it’s an “odd couple” style set up in the making, whether they end up teaming, feuding or otherwise.

While it could work, by contrast, Dominik Mysterio was reported “frustrated” with his main roster booking at a time that would see him face Danhausen in a Human Monies on a Pole match.

Just a bump in the road

Signing with WWE in 2018, GUNTHER has experienced a name change and is a former NXT UK Champion, Intercontinental Champion and two-time World Heavyweight Champion. There’s little doubt that further title reigns will be in his future, with his current story just being a bump in the road.

Over the years, WWE has presented stars in ways that appear to waste them: Roman Reigns ate dog food before becoming the Tribal Chief, LA Knight was Max Dupri for a time before experiencing a surge in popularity, and there was a brief period last year that saw R-Truth exit the company only to return shortly thereafter. That’s just three instances in the long history of WWE, with many more no doubt to come.

Regardless of what some may feel about the use of GUNTHER, there’s an argument to be made that he (and WWE creative) can continue to play with expectations before launching into the next major feud that will remind fans of just how the star is primed for long-term success.
