From the moment she first stepped foot in an NXT ring, Shayna Baszler held the women’s division hostage. Even before she defeated Ember Moon for the title, she was tapping, napping and snapping anyone in her way.

A former MMA athlete, Baszler sadistically used wrestling holds and chokes to scare all but a few from challenging her place at the top of The Gold Brand.

The magic of Shayna is her ability to transport us back in time with her old-school style and storytelling. While she captures this magic with Becky on Raw, these NXT matches show that her monster persona is tried and tested.

Baszler could become the next Raw Women’s Champion at WrestleMania. If that coronation is anything like her NXT Championship reigns, she’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

  9. CM Punk vs. Heyman and Ryback – Hell in a Cell (HIAC 2013)
  10. CM Punk vs. The Shield (TLC 2013)

CM Punk’s last full year in the WWE was filled with amazing wrestling. He started the year battling The Rock for the WWE Championship. He then renewed rivalries with Cena, Undertaker, and Jericho, creating ‘Match of the Year’ contenders with each.

Heyman turning on his client became Punk’s obsession for the latter half of 2013, as he looked to get revenge. He and Brock Lesnar tore the house down at SummerSlam, before Punk feuded with Ryback for most of the rest of the year.

After listening to Punk break his silence on Cabana’s podcast, it’s evident that Punk didn’t enjoy his 2013 in WWE. This makes his year of matches compelling to re-watch, to see which issues led to Punk leaving the wrestling world.

Whether you’re engrossed in WWE’s backstage politics or not, Punk’s final matches are some of his most entertaining. Filled with expert storytelling, these contests are must-watch for any fans of the former ROH star.

1. Daniel Bryan vs. Authority

Key Matches:

  1. Cena (c) vs. Bryan – WWE Championship (SummerSlam 2013)
  2. Orton (c) vs. Bryan – WWE Championship (Night of Champions 2013)
  3. Bryan vs. Orton – WWE Championship Hell in a Cell (HIAC 2013)
  4. The Usos vs. Wyatt and Bryan – Steel Cage match (Raw 13th January 2014)
  5. Bryan vs. Wyatt (Royal Rumble 2014)
  6. Orton (c) vs. Bryan vs. Christian vs. Cesaro vs. Sheamus vs. Cena – WWE Championship Elimination Chamber (Elimination Chamber 2014)
  7. Bryan vs. Triple H (WrestleMania XXX)
  8. Orton (c) vs. Batista vs. Bryan (WrestleMania XXX)

Many people call Bryan’s road to WrestleMania in 2014 ‘Bryan vs. The Authority’. This is because Daniel’s biggest obstacle standing between him and the title was Triple H’s handpicked faction.

A more accurate title for this series of matches is ‘Bryan vs. Authority’. It all started with Daniel literally kneeing the head off Cena’s body, dropping the literal ‘face’ of WWE.

After Triple H and Randy tried to keep him down, The Leader Of The Yes Movement fought back with every opportunity. Even during his feud with Bray, Daniel rejected The Wyatt Family trying to claim authority over him.

Eventually, Daniel Bryan’s defiance took him to the main event of WrestleMania XXX. While he physically vanquished ‘The Authority’, Bryan’s real victory was over bullies trying to claim superiority over others.

These matches were full of giant challenges for the 5ft10 athlete. With the uncertainty of current events, Bryan overcoming adversity is the perfect slice of freedom we can relive in our own homes.
