3. Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk – SummerSlam 2013
Brock Lesnar and CM Punk were both Paul Heyman guys before Heyman turned on Punk at Money in the Bank 2013. What resulted was Punk’s match with Lesnar at SummerSlam, the match WWE considered their match of the year.
Punk was not happy with his position in WWE at the time but he brought the goods when he got in the ring. This was an example of that. He and Lesnar had a great back-and-forth Extreme Rules match. Lesnar had just gone through his rivalry with Triple H which was alright but this was a blow away performance from both him and Punk. Paul Heyman got involved allowing Punk to get a measure of revenge on him but it also allowed Lesnar to hit an F5 and get the win. Tremendous stuff.
2. Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena vs. Seth Rollins – Royal Rumble 2015
The lone highlight of an otherwise dreadful pay per view, Brock Lesnar’s WWE Championship match against Seth Rollins and John Cena at the Royal Rumble was absolutely fantastic. Sometimes the best matches are the ones that tell the most simple stories. This was one of those times.
Cena was the hero, Rollins was the villain, and Lesnar was the monster. Occasionally, Rollins and Cena would have to put their differences aside to take Brock out but that would only last so long. Rollins tried to weasel his way into winning but Brock was just too much for either man to handle. This was one of his most dominant performances and the argument could be made for this being his best match.
1. Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle – SmackDown (September 18, 2003)
This could easily be considered the best match in Lesnar’s career, Angle’s career, and SmackDown history. The 60-minute Iron Man match from September 2003 was a work of storytelling art. Iron Man matches are tricky because if you overdo it with falls then it gets ridiculous but if you don’t have any then it is really boring. This match hit the sweet spot.
Brock Lesnar was strategic, sacrificing the first fall to decimate Angle with a chair. He then took over, gaining several falls on him in quick succession. This left Angle to race against the clock to try and catch up and tie Lesnar in falls before the time ran out. This was excellent pro wrestling theatre.
