13. Gold Rush (2005)
The Gold Rush tournament took place over three episodes of Raw in May 2005 to determine a number one contender to World Heavyweight Champion Batista.
The tournament is best known for a classic encounter between Shawn Michaels and Shelton Benjamin, featuring a legendary finish where Michaels superkicked Shelton out of mid-air following a springboard.
Both men could have, in theory, wrestled in the World Cup had WWE wished, which is fairly ridiculous in 2018 if you think about it.
Although Shawn and Shelton’s quarter final match stole the show, there was plenty of top action elsewhere too. Chris Benoit’s win over Triple H was enjoyable, as was Edge’s win over Chris Jericho.
Edge went on to win the entire thing, beating Shawn in the semis before downing Kane in the final.
