The biggest match set for the first WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event will be Cody Rhodes facing Randy Orton in a WrestleMania 42 rematch.
After Orton made his return to cost him the Undisputed WWE Championship at SummerSlam 2026, Rhodes has been hellbent on revenge against his former friend and mentor.
Now with this showdown set for SNME, fans could see any number of finishes to this grudge match.

Randy Orton uses the punt kick to avenge his WrestleMania 42 loss
At WWE WrestleMania 42 Night One, Cody Rhodes defeated Randy Orton to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Post match, Orton got a measure of revenge by attacking Rhodes with the WWE Title belt and delivering a vicious Punt Kick to the skiull.
Then after taking several months off, Orton returned to cost Rhodes his title bout against CM Punk at WWE SummerSlam 2026.
In a callback to Mania, Orton could pick up the victory at WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event with the Punt Kick once again.
Randy Orton & Cody Rhodes goes to a double DQ when the fight goes all over the arena
Following WWE SummerSlam 2026, Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton were at each other’s throats.
This led to the two men brawling all over the building on the August 14 episode of SmackDown.
From there, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis announced a no-contact rule between Rhodes and Orton. If either man broke it, they would never be able to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
After weeks of being unable to fight one another, there might not be a referee who will be able to control things, leading to Orton and Rhodes potentially fighting all over the arena until the match is thrown out.
Cody Rhodes snaps after Randy Orton goes after his family
In a bid to get under his rival’s skin, Randy Orton has been bringing Cody Rhodes’ family into their rivalry.
Calling out his wife Brandi and even his mother, Orton has attempted to trigger Rhodes into attacking him.
The September 6 WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event will take place from Cody’s hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
This could see Cody’s family being in the building and could lead to Orton choosing to go after the Rhodes family in what could lead to all hell breaking loose.

Cody Rhodes recently made a claim that he will be the one to “kill” the legend of Randy Orton.
When stating this, Rhodes ended his promo by reiterating the famous catchphrase of Paul Heyman with “it’s not a prediction, it’s a spoiler.”
This led to many fans believing this may be a tease that Rhodes will be joining forces with Paul Heyman sooner rather than later.
Heyman showing up to help Cody beat Orton at Sunday Night’s Main Event would be the first sign of a new powerful pairing of power brokers in WWE.
