WWE
With a career fast approaching its fortieth year, the quest to find the next Rey Mysterio in WWE is still ongoing.
Inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2023, Rey Mysterio is one of a small number of stars to receive that accolade and still be competing on television.
Mysterio’s allure has seen him continue as a star in WWE Raw, most recently facing Chad Gable for the Intercontinental Championship, along with servicing as the general manager of AAA.
With every luchador signing, the idea that they could be the “next Rey Mysterio” in WWE emerges, yet nobody has managed to take over the reins from the star.
That’s not to say there aren’t stars who could follow in his legendary footsteps currently signed to WWE, however.
Dragon Lee
A second-generation wrestler, Dragon Lee signed with WWE in December 2022 and has gone on to be a member of the LWO. A former NXT North American Champion, Lee has also held the World Tag Team Championship (with AJ Styles) on the main roster, along with a run as WWE Speed Champion.
Penta
Whether he’s Penta El Zero Miedo, Pentagón Jr. or simply Penta, the star has built up quite the legacy across the past almost twenty years, holding the championships in AEW, Impact Wrestling, across the independent scene and in his home of AAA.
With a debut in January 2025, Penta has gone on to hold the Intercontinental Championship, pointing him the right direction of a top title reign. A solid singles competitor, the star has made it clear that he expects to reunite with Rey Fenix down the line.
Rey Fenix
The real-life brother of Penta, Rey Fenix signed with WWE in March of last year, although is yet to capture his first championship.
An AEW International Champion, World Tag Team Champion and World Trios Champion, Fenix has also seen his fair share of titles in AAA and across the independent scene.
Very much like The Hardys or The Usos, there’s an opportunity to bring the brothers together but also to explore their rivalry across their respective careers.
Dominik Mysterio
Already the self-declared “Greatest Mysterio of All Time”, the Judgment Day member is the current AAA Mega Champion and a former SmackDown Tag Team Champion with his Hall of Famer ‘deadbeat dad’. A two-time WWE Intercontinental Champion and two-time NXT North American Champion, the star has proven that he suits championships.
It might take a change of character for the star to eclipse his father, but “always a big possibility“, according to the legendary star himself.
The Non-Mexican Luchadors.
Are they simply masked wrestlers, true luchadors or luchafauxs? That’s a question that could be asked of a number of current WWE stars who wrestle in masks.
While it’s difficult to see any of them eclipsing Rey Mysterio with Mexican stars on the roster, WWE currently sees Axiom, El Grande Americano (Ludwig Kaiser), Elio LeFleur, Bravo Americano (Tyler Bate), and Rayo Americano (Pete Dunne) all in masks. For the three Americanos, they’ve been well received in AAA, on a roster of many Mexican-born luchadors, clearly indicating that they are paying respect to tradition.
With Chad Gable now unmasked as the Original El Grande Americano, the star has opened up about the AAA fan reaction to his heel persona, recognizing their passion.
