WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event takes place on September 6 and will feature a number of first-time-ever moments.
Taking place during Labor Day weekend, Sunday Night’s Main Event heads to State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, with four matches so far confirmed for the show.
Among those matches, the show sees a number of firsts for WWE, including:
The First SNME To Take Place On Sunday
September 6 marks the first time that Saturday Night’s Main Event will take place on Sunday, hence the name change.
Originally, the date would have been occupied by WWE Money in the Bank, having previously been scheduled for August 29, only for plans to shift again as the PLE moved to October 10.
Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton
For the first time since WrestleMania 42 on April 18, Cody Rhodes faces Randy Orton, although he won’t be defending the Undisputed WWE Championship after losing it at Night of Champions to Sami Zayn on June 27, with CM Punk ending that reign on the July 6 episode of Raw.
Oba Femi vs. Bron Breakker
The “future of WWE” collide at Sunday Night’s Main Event in a match that sees Oba Femi face Bron Breakker in singles action for the first time.
Since arriving on the main roster, Femi has faced Breakker a number of time, although all those matches were of the tag team variety. The pair have become very familiar with each other over recent months, with July and August seeing multiple matches in which The Vision (Breakker & Austin Theory) retained the WWE World Tag Team Championship against LA Knight or Seth Rollins and Femi via disqualification.
Baron Corbin vs. Lil Yachty
A first-time match in WWE for the rapper and record producer, Lil Yachty faces Baron Corbin with the stipulation that a win for the singer-songwriter will grant Trick Williams a rematch for the United States Championship later on the show.
The match won’t be a long one, with a five-minute time limit stipulation being another rarity outside of WWE Speed Championship matches, which will be no more as both titles were recently retired.
Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss & Tatum Paxley vs. Jade Cargill, Michin & B-Fab
Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Jade Cargill, B-Fab and Michin are all familiar with the Peacock special, but for Tatum Paxley it’s a first-time engagement.
A former NXT Women’s Champion, Paxley was called up to the main roster on the August 7 episode of WWE SmackDown, allying herself with Bliss and Flair. August 24 saw Paxley secure a singles win over Michin, while she will team with Charlotte Flair against Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid) on this week’s pre-taped SmackDown (spoilers right here).
That alliance continues at Sunday Night’s Main Event, with Flair, Bliss and Paxley taking on Cargill, Michin and B-Fab.
The Road To WWE Money In Bank
Sunday Night’s Main Event will be followed by Worlds Collide on September 26, with CM Punk set to appear at the crossover show.
From there, the next stop is WWE Money in the Bank at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, with the titular men’s and women’s matches returning and an opportunity to secure a championship match at a later date.
