Rey Mysterio has described his journey from a high school dropout to the General Manager of WWE AAA as a “full-circle” moment.
Aged 51, Rey Mysterio is still going strong as an active member of the Raw roster, with the WWE Hall of Famer reminding everyone what he’s capable of this past Monday (June 8) when he and Penta tore the house down in their Intercontinental Title Match in Paris, France.
As well as competing inside the ring, Rey has also recently taken on a role near and dear to his own pro wrestling journey as he was named the new WWE AAA General Manager on May 24.
Lucha Libre AAA is where Mysterio first built his name as teenager breaking into the pro wrestling scene, and he wrestled for the promotion from its very beginning in 1992 until 1997.
During his appearance on Six Feet Under with The Undertaker & Michelle McCool, Rey was asked whether it was true that he dropped out of high school in order to pursue his wrestling dreams, to which Rey answered:
“That is true. When I started at 14 I began to wrestle locally in Tijuana, still was going to school. Every morning, I would wake up cross the border, Montgomery High School in San Diego. Finish high school, go to my part-time job, Godfather’s Pizza 4-6, two hours, sometimes two and a half. And then was done there, take the trolley back to the border, cross the border, take the cab or the bus to the house. I would have roughly about half an hour, 45 minutes to do homework and then 8’o’clock wrestling school started and I would have go to wrestling class. I did everything throughout my day to wait for those last two hours of my day because I really loved being there.”
Rey then recalled his close friend, and AAA Hall of Famer Konnan persuading him to ditch his high school life in order to join AAA for the promotion’s start-up:
“But I wrestled (from) 14 until about 17, and aged 17 AAA was gonna start, and I remember Konnan giving me a call and he goes ‘Bro, here’s your opportunity. You wanna come wrestle in Mexico? Now’s your chance.’ I was like ‘What’s going on?’ He goes ‘We’re getting ready to start this promotion, AAA and this is where you wanna be.’
“‘Like I can’t leave, I’m in 11th grade, my parents aren’t gonna let me just take off.’ He was like ‘Don’t worry I’ll talk to them.’ ‘What about my girlfriend?’ ‘Well if she loves you she’ll wait.’ Which she did, she waited for me, she even helped me. And everything just kind of fell in place. He convinced my parents that I can go to Mexico during vacation. When that happened, I never came back, it started to just expand and get bigger and bigger.”
With Rey now currently the GM of the promotion he first began his career, he described the journey as a “full-circle” moment:
“Crazy enough to be able to say that I was at the first ever AAA show on live television, and to see the full-circle now. It’s insane.”
