First-time WWE US Champion to be crowned: Five stars who could hold the title following Trick Williams

The WWE United States Championship recently changed hands, with Trick Williams winning back the gold at Sunday Night’s Main Event.

Williams is now in his second reign as US Champion, having first won the title at WrestleMania 42 in April.

From former world champions to young stars looking to make history, there are a number of competitors in WWE who we could see hold this gold for the first time in the coming months.

Here are five potential first-time WWE US Champions.

Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes is one of several stars who are one championship win away from becoming a Grand Slam winner by WWE’s modern ruleset.

Following reigns with the Undisputed WWE, Raw and SmackDown tag, and Intercontinental titles, the American Nightmare is just one US Championship reign short of joining one of WWE’s most exclusive groups.

With Rhodes unsuccessfully challenging for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, and losing to Randy Orton at Sunday Night’s Main Event, it would be interesting to see the top star continue his character change storyline in the US Title scene.

Having crossed paths with Trick Williams just a few times in WWE, we could soon see Rhodes and Williams finally face off one-on-one, with the title on the line.

Je’Von Evans

Je’Von Evans is another star whose potential US Championship win would be significant for the history books.

While Evans has stated that he’s “very locked in and focused” on becoming the youngest ever world and Intercontinental champions in WWE history, the 22 year old also has the chance to become the youngest US Champion under the WWE banner.

While David Flair is generally recognised as the youngest US Champion, having won the WCW US Title at 20 years old, Je’Von Evans could become the youngest US Champion specifically in WWE, since the title’s revival in the years since the acquisition of WCW.

Austin Theory was the youngest champion since the reactivation of the title, at the age of 24, meaning Je’Von Evans has until January 2029 to break this very specific record.

Kit Wilson

In March, Kit Wilson revealed his goal of challenging for the US Championship during WrestleMania 42 weekend.

This ultimately didn’t happen, with Wilson instead competing in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal, which Royce Keys won.

With Wilson spending many of the months since then as a tag-team act with The Miz, the former Pretty Deadly member did re-enter the US Title scene on the house show circuit this summer, challenging for the gold on August 22.

A US Championship victory would be an intriguing development for Wilson, who could then have a championship feud against his mentor, The Miz.

Ricky Saints

Ricky Saints was presented as a top prospect upon being brought to the main roster in May, with his SmackDown debut match being against then-WWE Champion Cody Rhodes.

Saints has competed in several championship matches since then, but is yet to win his first title on the main roster.

While the former NXT Champion did unsuccessfully challenge for Trick Williams’ US Title at Night of Champions, Saints consistently challenging for this title at non-televised house shows has led many to believe that he will challenge for the gold on TV in the future.

With Saints previously earmarked as a future star, a US Championship reign would be a great way for him to prove himself to the SmackDown audience.

Drew McIntyre

Drew McIntyre is another star who is one US Championship away from becoming a WWE Grand Slam winner.

McIntyre hasn’t appeared on WWE TV since losing to Jacob Fatu at WrestleMania 42, with the Scottish Warrior shooting multiple movies during his absence.

Previous reports about Drew McIntyre being back in the US have fuelled speculation about the former Undisputed WWE Champion’s return storyline.

With the WWE Championship scene currently very crowded, it would be an interesting turn of events to see McIntyre dominate the SmackDown midcard scene.
