How Andrade El Idolo Became A Legitimate AEW World Title Contender

In January 2026, Andrade El Idolo made his return to All Elite Wrestling and immediately placed himself in a prominent star.

Prior to his comeback, El Idolo had a high profile departure and release from WWE after a wellness policy violation.

Despite being released in September 2025, “The Real Latino Man” would immediately show back up in AEW the very next month.

After a lengthy non-compete clause was discussed, it was just be a matter of months before Andrade was back in Tony Khan’s promotion.

Just months later, El Idolo is now a bonafide top contender for the AEW World Championship.

Thanks to a presentation change, a new character and some credibility building wins, Andrade can stake his claim to a shot at the richest prize in All Elite Wrestling, but many fans who have not been watching are wondering why.

Joining the Don Callis Family

Established by Don Callis in 2023, The Don Callis Family have become one of the most featured acts in AEW today.

When Andrade El Idolo made his way back to All Elite Wrestling, he found a home in the DCF.

Over the next few months, Andrade was featured weekly as a fresh new star in the main event and upper mid-card scene.

Thanks to his association with Don Callis, Andrade immediately positioned himself as a top contender and someone who was in pursuit of the AEW World Title.

Fans started to see that Callis balancing act with all of his clients soon became something that El Idolo had to overcome.

With his growing popularity and the lack of chances at the AEW World Title, it led to Andrade quickly outgrowing his place in the DCF.

That led to AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2026 where Andrade El Idolo turned on the Don Callis Family in the Death’s Door Match.

That initial association with the DCF has set up Andrade with natural rivals from the group like Kazuchika Okada, Kyle Fletcher, Kevin Knight and Mark Davis.

It also saw El Idolo defeating Davis to become the new AEW National Champion at Redemption 2026.

Credible wins against top stars

It was one thing for Andrade El Idolo to come back to AEW wanting a world title.

It was another thing when the company gave him the opportunity to establish himself as a main eventer against other major stars.

On the January 28 episode of AEW Dynamite, Andrade defeated Swerve Strickland.

Then the week following, El Idolo went on to pull off an upset victory over Kenny Omega.

This meant in back-to-back weeks Andrade had beaten two former AEW World Champions.

These victories helped to elevate Andrade El Idolo up the card and place him among the top names in the promotion moving forward.

To add to this, Andrade gained yet another massive win when he won the Men’s Casino Gauntlet at AEW All In London 2026.

Now coming out of the biggest show of the year, El Idolo owns a guaranteed shot at the AEW World Title at the time of his choosing.

The character & presentation change leads to a signature catchphrase

Andrade El Idolo has long been one of the most talented in-ring performers in wrestling today.

The former NXT Champion has had semblances of an intriguing character throughout his various runs in WWE and AEW.

However, things have never quite come together in his previous stints in these major promotions.

Then upon his return to All Elite Wrestling, El Idolo became “The Real Latino Man.”

With his good looks and charms, Andrade started to woo the ladies in the crowd and taking selfies in the middle of his matches.

Adding to this presentation change, El Idolo also started to remove his pants to the delight of the female fanbase.

Now fully embracing his Latin Lover-like persona, Andrade walks to the squared circle with a bevy of beauties by his side.

To cap things off on this character change, Andrade called back to his first run with AEW.

During a famous backstage segment, El Idolo once uttered the words of “How You Know?” in response to one of his rivals.

 

Then, Andrade used the question against MJF in a backstage segment and the rest is history.

Now, Andrade El Idolo cannot walk into any arena in the world without the fans chanting “How You Know.”

This feels like the final form of El Idolo with the incredible in-ring ability that has helped him put his name on the map matched by an over the top and popular character.

The rivalry with MJF

After staking his claim for the AEW World Title, Andrade El Idolo garnered the attention of then-champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman, MJF.

Starting with backstage segments on AEW TV, Andrade and MJF built tension with one another.

While El Idolo wanted his opportunity at the top prize in the company, MJF kept denying him a title shot.

Due to his association with The Don Callis Family, Andrade was forced to do MJF’s bidding when he faced Darby Allin at AEW Dynasty and then again when he teamed with MJF and the DCF in the Death’s Door at Forbidden Door.

At the Forbidden Door pay-per-view, Andrade finally snapped and turned on both MJF and the Don Callis Family.

To get under MJF’s skin, Andrade even gained possession of his rival’s Dynamite Diamond Ring following his AEW World Title loss to Kenny Omega at Beach Break.

This led to Friedman making his return to brutally assault El Idolo at AEW Grand Slam Mexico.

Heading into the Men’s Casino Gauntlet at AEW All In London 2026, it looked like the focus of this bout was firmly on the rivalry between Andrade and MJF.

Despite picking up the win in the Casino Gauntlet, it doesn’t seem like things are settled with the former three-time AEW World Champion.

Considering the successful year he has had so far, it feels like this is the hottest period of Andrade’s entire career.

After start-and-stop pushes in both major companies and jumping more times than anyone else, it feels like Andrade El Idolo is finally home and has cemented himself as a legitimate AEW World Title contender moving forward.
