Making Drew McIntyre’s WWE return matter: what can be done with the former world champion

Former Undisputed WWE Champion Drew McIntyre is gearing up for a return to in-ring action, but how can his return be made to matter?

Having taken time away to film the Highlander reboot movie, Drew McIntyre recently shared a short clip on social media showing that the WWE star has stepped back into the ring.

With McIntyre’s last (unsanctioned) match being a loss to Jacob Fatu at WrestleMania 42 in April of this year, there are options to bring him back with an impact:

Destroy Everything

There’s a lot of chaos in the SmackDown main event picture at the moment, with Sami Zayn holding the Undisputed WWE Championship and attracting attention from Johnny Gargano, Kevin Owens and others.

A returning McIntyre could be a further spanner in the works for Zayn’s title reign, particularly if the Scottish star makes his presence felt by destroying everyone in his path to a fourth Undisputed WWE Championship reign.

Free Agent

What’s better than Drew McIntyre on SmackDown? McIntyre on Raw as well.

Few WWE stars are ‘free agents‘ allowing to appear on any brand, and McIntyre could be a difference maker in a title feud on Raw or SmackDown.

With Money in the Bank taking place on October 10, LA Knight faces Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship, a perfect opportunity for McIntyre to ruin the night for both stars. Then there’s the titular men’s match, with only one name to be decided.

New Alliance

McIntyre hasn’t been a member of a faction since 3MB prior to his release in June 2014.

With the landscape of WWE being reshaped by The MFTs (now led by Haku) and the 946, while The Bloodline and Judgment Day remain prominent, an opportunity could exist for McIntyre to return in a faction of his own.

Under McIntyre’s leadership, introducing a hungry collective of NXT stars to the main roster could serve the veteran well when it comes to tearing down the competition.

McIntyre is a former NXT Champion, so he wouldn’t necessarily look out of place if he were to go on a talent scouting exercise.

Extending His Grasp On Greatness

A Triple Crown Champion, Drew McIntyre would need to claim the WWE United States Championship to elevate himself to Grand Slam status. That title is currently in the hands of Trick Williams, who defeated Baron Corbin at Sunday Night’s Main Event to kick off his second reign.

It’s certainly a feud worth considering for a returning Drew McIntyre, although may seem a bit “beneath” a former multi-time world champion. That said, in his retirement year, John Cena captured the Intercontinental Championship for the first time in his career.

Same old, same old

There are paths to build Drew McIntyre into the destructive opponent that he has often been in WWE, but freshening him up in an overly familiar main event picture may be a challenge.

Finding a direction back to the top that doesn’t necessarily retread too much of his storied past would be also be a challenge. And, then there’s that loss to Jacob Fatu at WrestleMania 42.
