Where is Drew McIntyre? An update on the Scottish Warrior’s WWE absence following five months away

Drew McIntyre has been off of WWE TV for over five months, last appearing for the company at WrestleMania 42 in late April.

With McIntyre losing to Jacob Fatu in an Unsanctioned match at Show of Shows, the Scottish Warrior hasn’t stepped foot in a WWE ring since.

Following recent hints that McIntyre is preparing for an in-ring return, there has been some speculation about his ongoing absence.

So, where has Drew McIntyre been over the past five months? Short answer: a bunch of places. Long answer…

Hollywood (via Scotland)

Drew McIntyre swapped the wrestling ring for movie sets during his hiatus, filming for multiple Hollywood films while out of action.

McIntyre returned home to Scotland to film for Amazon MGM Studios’ Highlander reboot, from John Wick director Chad Stahelski.

Per IMDb, this movie will follow an “immortal Scottish swordsman” who “faces off with other immortal warriors in order to obtain a coveted ability.”

McIntyre will play the role of Angus MacLeod, the brother of the main character, Connor MacLeod, who will be played by Henry Cavill.

Other notable names set to star in this movie include Russell Crowe, Karen Gillan and former WWE Champion Dave Bautista.

This won’t be McIntyre’s first role in a film alongside Bautista, who notably recommended the Scottish WWE star for a role in the 2024 action-comedy “The Killer’s Game”.

The new Highlander movie wasn’t the only Hollywood project Drew McIntyre worked on amid his WWE hiatus, with Deadline announcing in June that the wrestler had been cast in “The Last Druid”.

Per Deadline, filming for this movie started in June, and saw McIntyre work alongside Russell Crowe for his second film of the summer.

The Last Druid is about a Roman Emperor who “discovers a secluded Druid stronghold in the mountains of Caledonia.” Russell Crowe reportedly plays “a peaceful Celtic elder” who “must take up arms to protect his family and people from annihilation.”

This film will also feature Tennyson Crowe – the son of Russell Crowe – in his second-ever acting role.

WWE or movies?

With McIntyre filming for multiple projects during his extended break from WWE, there has been some speculation about the former Undisputed WWE Champion following in Dave Bautista and John Cena’s footsteps and stepping away from the ring for good in favor of making a name for himself in Hollywood.

In an interview with ESPN SportsCenter in April ahead of WrestleMania 42, Drew McIntyre stated that, while he was excited to be part of these major projects, WWE is his home. 

Liv Morgan shared a similar sentiment while talking about her role in Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, stating that she feels she’s a WWE lifer, and that she’ll wrestle until the wheels fall off.

PWInsider reported in late-August that Drew McIntyre was back in the US, but at that point there had been no creative discussions about McIntyre’s return to TV.

The Scottish star has since shared an update of his own, posting a video to social media on Friday (September 25) of him running the ropes.

McIntyre wasn’t training at just any wrestling school, the ring belonged to KECH Pro Wrestling Academy, which is owned and operated by Raw star Rusev. This training school – where wrestling veteran Gangrel also coaches – is based in Nashville, Tennessee.

With there being plenty of potential directions for Drew McIntyre’s return storyline, we’ll have to wait and see as to when the Scottish Warrior next shows up on our screens.
