Tony Khan Reveals Reason For No Women’s AEW Blood & Guts Match AEW

With the AEW Dynamite Blood and Guts match for 2023 now in the history books, Tony Khan has explained why there isn’t a women’s version.

On the July 19 episode of AEW Dynamite, the main event saw The Golden Elite’s Kenny Omega, “Hangman” Adam Page, The Young Bucks and Kota Ibushi joining forces to take on Blackpool Combat Club’s Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, Konosuke Takeshita and Pac.

The Golden Elite were victorious with the dissension within the opposing side seeing Castagnoli versus Pac announced for ROH Death Before Dishonor this Friday at “very short notice“.

Tony Khan would address why there isn’t a women’s version of the Blood and Guts match during the Blood & Guts and ROH Death Before Dishonor media call, saying:

“It would have been an interesting idea, it could have been a great match.

“I definitely think Jamie Hayter’s injury, is probably a five-on-five there given some of the depth issues, and especially given Willow Nightingale just got back and putting her in that kind of match after she had a major head injury in Japan, probably wouldn’t be very smart.

“We’ve had some other major injuries there, and when there was some fan momentum for that idea, I think the Outcasts vs. Jamie, Britt, and some others, was really running red hot and Jamie Hayter was a part of that.

“Some of the momentum for that, when Jamie Hayter was running hot as champion, was there, and I’m not sure at this moment, given some of the injuries we had, that was feasible.

“Also, with so many of the women competing this week in the Owen Hart Cup tournament, it is a very hard-hitting match and there is a lot of attrition for it.

“Santana still hasn’t been back from last year. The women’s division is pretty beat up, they’ve been beating the hell out of each other.

“Probably was not a feasible idea for them this year.”

There have been three Blood and Guts events matches in AEW history, with the first taking place in May 2021 featuring The Inner Circle (Chris Jericho, Jake Hager, Sammy Guevara, Santana & Ortiz) against The Pinnacle (MJF, Wardlow, Shawn Spears, Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood).

The second match would be in June 2022 featuring The Jericho Appreciation Society (Chris Jericho, Jake Hager, Sammy Guevara, Daniel Garcia, Matt Menard, & Angelo Parker) going against the team of Eddie Kingston, Santana, Ortiz, and Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, & Wheeler Yuta).
