A current AEW Champion has detail talks they had with WWE and almost signing with the company prior to signing with AEW.
Current AEW Women’s Tag Team Champion Harley Cameron competed in only her second-ever wrestling match on an episode of AEW Dark against current tag team partner Willow Nightingale.
Harley would go on to sign with AEW after only 21 matches in her career, and she has now opened up on talks she had with WWE, and conversations she had with the company prior to joining AEW.
Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, she said:
“I will say thank you to them, because thanks to them I have my green card. Thanks to them I learned to wrestle, they helped me with wrestling training to Flatbacks.
“I believe they went through a transitional stage where, in their office, certain people were released from the company, they went through some big changes, and I guess fate just didn’t lead me in that direction, and in the interim of not knowing what was going on, had an opportunity to be at AEW Dark, then I had another opportunity there, and was offered the contract with AEW.
“After being in this country for so long and wanting to be a professional wrestler and this door open for me, I went to AEW and I’m so glad I did because I feel it was where I was meant to be.
“Definitely no dirty greasy story there or anything, but they definitely helped me with my wresting journey, just AEW snatched me up.
“(She didn’t train at the Performance Center) because I couldn’t legally be there as I didn’t have working ability, but they sent me to Flatbacks when I was initially chatting with them, and I had fantastic training with Breeze and Spears.
“I don’t know whether interest was lost in the journey but AEW found me and I’m very lucky they did. I was in communications back and forth, but it’s not like I got a contract offer, but I initially, that was my initial first goal was definitely going that direction.
“I think AEW has allowed me to showcase who I am as a performer. Tony Khan has given me so many amazing opportunities, and I’m so lucky he took a chance on someone who only had 21 matches, because I’m so proud to be working there and so proud to be a belt holder now, so I think that sometimes when you think the universe is saying no, it’s because they have other plans.”
