AEW Name Quit WWE Due To Restrictive Role WWE

Following a career that included runs with TNA/Impact Wrestling, a veteran of the ring joined WWE before leaving two years later.

The former Impact X Division Champion, Sonjay Dutt, has revealed the reason why he left the opportunity he had been given when he signed with WWE.

Speaking to Renee Paquette on The Sessions, the wrestling veteran said:

“So, it has been now — 2012 is when I first kind of worked in the office at TNA and Impact Wrestling.

“So, for 10 years now, like a lot of people, especially if you’ve worked with me in WWE where I was just a match producer, and that is kind of what WWE is where, ‘Okay, this is your job,’ which kind of was part of the reason why I wanted to quit.

“I was like, ‘Look, I know in my heart of hearts I can do more than just be a match producer,’ because before WWE I was at Impact, and what you see now I did at Impact.

“So, I had all these experiences and when I got to WWE it was like, ‘Okay, you have this one segment, and you’re gonna produce it, and then that’s it.'”

Dutt’s contribution to wrestling has seen him work across the independent circuit and have two successful runs in TNA/Impact Wrestling.

As part of his 2017 run in Impact Wrestling, Dutt signed as a producer, though would see in-ring action as part of the X Division.

He would also be part of the commentary team, alongside Josh Matthews, following surgery to fix a torn Achilles tendon.

In January of 2019, he would be granted his release from Impact Wrestling, joining WWE in the same month.

He would leave WWE in June 2021 and sign with AEW as a producer.

Since joining AEW, he has also been an on-screen wrestling manager with Jay Lethal.
