A big WWE departure has now been officially confirmed as a multi-time World Champion has exited the company.

Earlier today, reports emerged that Sheamus was set to leave WWE upon the expiration of his contract, which was expected to be some time soon.

In an update, WWE has now moved Sheamus to the alumni section of its official website roster page.

That would indicate he is no longer under contract and officially gone from the company as of this moment.

Since this is a contract expiration and not a release, it would mean that Sheamus is now a free agent and can wrestle freely anywhere right now – he could theoretically turn up in AEW as soon as this week’s Dynamite in two days’ time.

We’ll keep you posted if there are any further updates on his status, but as noted in the original story on his exit, Sheamus edited his social media profiles to his real name and changed his bios to simply “Pro Wrestler.”

The departure is said to be similar to New Day in the sense that Sheamus rejected an offer from WWE for a “restructured” deal, but rather than being released, his contract was coming up soon anyway, which is what’s happened now.

Plans For Sheamus In AEW

Of course there are plenty of avenues Sheamus could pursue now that’s no longer with WWE, but naturally the most discussed one online since the news emerged has been a potential move to AEW.

Chief among the talking points is the possibility of a reunion with Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro), who Sheamus won five WWE Tag Team Titles with before Castagnoli’s departure in 2022.

Castagnoli is a member of the Death Riders in AEW, who many fans have pointed out would fit with Sheamus’ no nonsense style as well.

One note that hasn’t been discussed is a potential reunion of sorts with Adam Copeland (Edge), whose last WWE match was against Sheamus himself in 2023.

Other prospects that have been suggested by fans include a run for Sheamus in the Continental Classic tournaments, where he could have hard hitting matches against names like Brody King, Rush and Darby Allin.
