A former WWE star has been stripped of his championship amid rumors of a potential return to the company.

For a number of weeks now, there has been talk of Baron Corbin making a return to WWE after his exit in November 2024 ended a 12-year tenure.

In the time since his departure, he’s been working as Bishop Dyer on the indies, primarily in MLW, where he’s reigned as MLW World Tag Team Champion alongside Donovan Dijak.

Last week, MLW announced on its Fusion show that it had been in a contract dispute with Dyer, which seemed like a potential storyline explanation for his departure if he is in fact returning to WWE soon.

This week, we got another update on that story, as it has been announced that Dyer has been “locked out” of MLW and stripped of his half of the World Tag Team Title.

MLW announcer Rich Bocchini – formerly Rich Brennan in NXT – said:

“I literally just stepped out of a series of high profile meetings with sources inside the MLW office and we have a major development regarding the World Tag Team Championship. Something that could really shift the entire landscape of Major League Wrestling.

“For weeks, the question has been, exactly where is Bishop Dyer? I can now confirm this – negotiations between Dyer and Major League Wrestling have officially hit a total standstill.

“My sources tell me that Dyer has been using – or attempting to use – his status as World Tag Team Champion as the ultimate leverage. We’re talking about a salary bump and perk demands that would make a billionaire blush.

“Now, the League’s response to this – ‘We’ve had enough.’ As of this moment, Bishop Dyer has officially been locked out of Major League Wrestling, until he returns with a reasonable mindset.

“But there’s a massive catch for the tag team division, and it’s this. The front office has ruled that Donovan Dijak will be allowed to remain World Tag Team Champion on one condition – a new tag team partner.

“The clock is ticking. If Dijak can find a partner by the end of Fusion, his reign will continue. If he can’t, the title will be vacated and put up for grabs when Major League Wrestling heads to Charleston, South Carolina.”

Later on during Fusion, Dijak revealed his new tag team partner to be Josh Bishop.

There remains a chance this is all a complete storyline and Dyer will remain with MLW, but as mentioned earlier, it could just as easily be the TV explanation for him leaving the promotion, rather than him just disappearing from the show out of nowhere.

Corbin’s WWE departure couldn’t have come at a much worse time, as he was just starting to get over as a babyface coming out of his NXT tag team with Bron Breakker.

He did work an AEW dark match earlier this year as well, so it would appear he’s on good terms there and that could be a potential landing spot if he doesn’t end up back with WWE.

We’ll continue to keep you posted with any further updates as they emerge.
