Captain Shawn Dean has recalled his upset ‘victory’ over MJF, revealing how the AEW bout came to be.
On the January 5 episode of Dynamite, Cm Punk hit Shawn Dean with a GTS, during his bout with MJF. This resulted in MJF getting disqualified, losing his first singles match since September 2021.
Dean’s shock victory was presented as a big deal, as MJF could no longer pursue his aim of being undefeated in 2022.
On AEW Unrestricted, Dean noted that he knew CM Punk was planning to cost MJF one of his matches, but only found out on the day that he’d be the one getting a technical win over the top star.
Dean noted:
“I was talking with CM Punk before it happened, and he was like, ‘I think I’m gonna cost MJF a match, but I just don’t know who it’s gonna be.’ The day of the show they’re like, ‘Yeah it’s gonna be you, and I’m like, ‘Oh s**t!””
On Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite, MJF cut an emotional promo, opening up about feeling like an outcast during his childhood, and how pro-wrestling allowed him to escape reality. Heartwarming social media posts made by MJF in 2015 have resurfaced, following the segment.
