‘Holy Crap, They’re Letting Us Do This Thing’ – Chad Gable Recalls Reaction To WWE Tag Team Pitch Being Approved

Chad Gable has recalled his reaction to a WWE tag team pitch being approved, having discussed it with his partner for a decade.

Prior to the current issues he has with Otis, Chad Gable would be one-half of Alpha Academy, a team that would later expand to include Akira Tozawa and Maxxine Dupri.

Speaking to KFAN, Gable reflected on the decision by WWE creative to put them together, revealing that it was a discussion they’d had many years ago, saying:

“So, we have known each other a long time. We trained together in Colorado Springs at the Olympic training center. Kind of lived on campus there together. Watched wrestling in a dark cold room many, many nights together. So we’ve been friends forever. It seemed like a natural thing to pair us up.

“I remember when we pitched the idea, and they actually went with it, it was like ‘Holy crap, they’re letting us do this thing, man, (that) we talked about 10 years ago.’

“So, the chemistry was there from the beginning; that was easy. We were already travelling together and riding together, so we just knew each other, it was perfect. But then, when you get in wrestling mode, it just clicked. Because he’s a psycho. We’re kind of like perfect teammates because I balance him out; I’m very reserved and all that.

“It was basically life playing out on screen most of the time, the way that our relationship was. So, it was great, it was easy, and easy transition.”

Gable and Otis would hold the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship for 56 days in early 2022, which still stands as the only time Otis has held gold in his decade run in WWE.

The Alpha Of The Academy

From its inception in November 2020, it’s easy to argue that Chad Gable was the dominant member of Alpha Academy, with Otis cast in the role of the lovable tag team partner.

With Gable turning his back on his faction in June 2024, Alpha Academy really didn’t have anyone to fill the top role, leaving them with a gap in the line up that was never truly filled.  Maxxine Dupri, who joined in May 2023, would go on to become Women’s Intercontinental Champion, but the title didn’t elevate her to the Gable role.

Despite Gable’s attempts to repair the rift with Alpha Academy, he’s been unsuccessful in that goal, with Dupri being the one to cut him down. He would reach out to Otis in the aftermath of his failed apology.

Dupri has since abandoned Alpha Academy, exploiting Otis’ feelings towards her and very much proving her allegiance to Austin Theory (and The Vision). Perhaps this is the moment that Gable needs to reunite with Otis, recapturing the glory they had as a tag team.

That said, there’s also the issue of The Creed Brothers, with Julius and Brutus having been members of American Made, alongside Gable, and latterly Los Hermanos Americanos when their leader was El Grande Americano.
