A former WWE name has recalled a promoter offering him money to reenact the Montreal Screwjob finish.
More than 25 years after the infamous incident, the Montreal Screwjob is often regarded as the most landscape shifting moment in WWE history.
The night Vince McMahon decided to screw Bret Hart during his WWF Championship match against Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997 has been the most talked about topic for wrestling fans in the nearly three decades since.
On the latest episode of Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw show, longtime referee Earl Hebner recalled when a promoter in Toronto wanted him to reenact the Montreal Screwjob finish for $5,000. Revealing that he did decline the offer, Hebner said:
“This is no s**t, a guy, some promoter from Toronto, I can’t think of his name, he called me up and how he got my number, I don’t know.”
“He called me up and said, ‘I wanna work a deal like Bret Hart on my show.’ He said, ‘I’ll give you 5,000 dollars to come over here and do that match but I wanna do the same finish.’ I said, ‘It’ll take 10,000 dollars to bury me. I ain’t coming.’”
Earl Hebner is currently retired from active refereeing, but he did return briefly to IMPACT Wrestling for an appearance at their Slammiversary event.
