Kelly Kelly was a former WWE Divas Champion, one of the figureheads of what passed for the company’s then female division, and unbelievably was rank eleventh in the 2011 PWI Female 50. Just get your head around that for a moment. Arguably, her career lasted longer than it had any right to.
In 2012, after suffering a neck injury, the woman born Barbie Blank stepped away from active in-ring competition to the disappointment of no one only to reappear on the reality show WAGS LA – go figure – through her marriage to professional hockey player Sheldon Souray. Her time on the show came to an end around the same time as their marriage in 2017. Again, go figure. She was a special attraction at Raw 25 in January and then a not so-surprise entrant in the inaugural 2018 Women’s Royal Rumble Match. Her participation was forgettable.
Now thirty years old and in the midst of a thriving modeling career, Blank took the time to speak to WrestlingNews.co about a possible return to WWE and her dream opponent. On the former, she said had this to say:
“I always say, “never say never”. Obviously, when I left 5 years ago I left the door open so when I got the opportunity to come back and be a part of the Royal Rumble, I was so excited about it. We have a great relationship – me and WWE, so the door is open so you never know.”
Despite what people may say about Blank’s ability or lack thereof between the ropes, WWE has always been a sucker for a pretty face and killer body. Kelly Kelly’s return to the ring would seem like a step backwards, however, especially since the company has done so much work in hiring and training females who can actually wrestle.
With her limited knowledge about the industry – no one can have failed to hear about her lack of knowhow where finishing moves are concerned – it was somewhat ironic that the website posed the question of who Blank would like to face if she were to return. To answer this, you have to have a decent familiarity with the business both past and present. Still, she gave it a crack, even if her answer was somewhat standard:
“I would have to say Charlotte. I feel like she is such an amazing wrestler. She is amazing all around. She has a gymnastics background. If feel we are similar without gymnastics and all that stuff. I think that would be a really exciting and thrilling match. I love her style and I think she’s amazing.”
I might just be a very cynical person, but putting aside the filler in that answer, the words ‘Kelly Kelly’ and ‘thrilling match’ have never been used in the same sentence ever. Unless the sentence is “I hope there’s a thrilling match after this Kelly Kelly dross.”
But hey, maybe we’re being a little hard. Someone people are born for this business, whilst others use it as a stepping stone to other things. Barbie Blank made professional wrestling work for her. She managed to use it to her advantage following retirement when not everyone does. For that, she should be congratulated. Just far, far away from a ring.
