A former rival and tag team partner of John Cena has criticised WWE’s booking of the 17-time world champion’s farewell tour.

With his final Raw appearance now in the rear-view, John Cena only has two more dates left in his WWE career – with the Intercontinental Champion set to defend his title against Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series 2025 on November 29, before proceeding to Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13 for his final match.

WWE’s handling Cena’s final year as an active competitor is something that has caused much debate and discussion throughout the year, and now, one of Cena’s former rivals has publicly spoken out about WWE’s handling of the run.

Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, former WWE star David Otunga expressed some disappointment with Cena’s booking, stating his belief that his last run has failed to provide much excitement:

“Honestly I wish it would have been a little bit more exciting. I don’t think it was what people expected.

“I wanted him to have a farewell tour like Kobe (Bryant) did. Kobe’s farewell tour was awesome, I feel like Cena deserves that because, let’s be honest he comes out and says he’s the greatest of all time, he’s not necessarily wrong. The guy does deserve it.

Otunga would then discuss Cena’s last match on Raw, saying he would have preferred WWE book him in a singles match rather than a six-man tag:

“I just would like to see more, I don’t even necessarily know what it would be. I just want them to put more into it.

“His last Raw at MSG, the six-man tag, it was cool but I would have preferred to see him have a one-on-one match that was great. Show us what John Cena did, leave us with what we know him for on Raw.”

Otunga feuded with Cena both as a part of the Nexus faction and as a singles star in WWE, with the pair even briefly winning the WWE Tag Team Championships together at Bragging Rights 2010, before dropping the gold just one day later.
