John Cena has reiterated that he will never wrestle again, going back to a promise he made when he was in his 20s.

Since his in-ring retirement in December, we’ve seen Cena appear at WrestleMania 42 in a hosting role and at WWE Backlash to announce the John Cena Classic event.

Cena signed a new deal to stay with the company which includes a certain number of appearances, but also sees him occupy a new role behind the scenes.

This has included him playing some role in scouting WWE developmental talent – as evidenced by his vocal support of NXT star Mason Rook – as well as promoting the Club WWE service.

Since there’s such a track record of retired wrestlers making returns, there will always be an element of doubt as to whether Cena’s match against GUNTHER in December was really his final match, or whether he’ll make a one-off return to the ring in the future.

John Cena Gave His ‘Physical Best’ To WWE

Having always been adamanant about the GUNTHER match legitimately being his last, John Cena hasn’t softened that stance and has reiterated that he’ll never wrestle again.

In a new interview on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, he said:

“Just in a new role. In-ring performance, I will not fall down again. I’m 49, I have given (my) physical best to WWE.

“The product is so fast, and time’s undefeated. Rather than hang around and put out a product that I feel might be less to our consumer, I made a promise to our fans – when I was young, when I was in my 20s, I said, and I quote, ‘When I’m a step slower, it’s time to go.’

“That’s happened, and it’s time to go.”

Cena’s position is in comparison to someone like AJ Styles who retired a month later and has stayed with WWE in a behind the scenes capacity, but has always said he won’t rule out a return to the ring at some point, his retirement just means he’s done for now and being full-time.
