John Cena To Be Special Referee For WWE Payback Match

John Cena made his return to WWE on last night’s (September 1) episode of SmackDown, where he announced himself as the host of tonight’s Payback premium live event.

It was not known exactly what Cena’s role on the show would be, but WWE has now announced a role for Cena.

On the Payback Kick-Off show, Cena was announced to be the Special Guest Referee for the match between The Miz and LA Knight.

Per Fightful Select (subscription required), Cena is also set for a promo segment on the show after the opening match, likely to set up his role as the special referee.

The match between Miz and Knight is slated to go on second on the show.

The show will kick off with the Steel Cage match between Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus, and be main evented by Seth Rollins vs Shinsuke Nakamura for the World Heavyweight Championship.

There has also been discussions about Cena appearing at Fastlane next month amid his ongoing return run.

A potential match between John Cena and Cody Rhodes has also been discussed internally for Cena’s return run.
