Top AEW Star Compares Approach To Wrestling To Mike Tyson’s In Boxing AEW

A top AEW star has compared his approach to wrestling to Mike Tyson’s in boxing.

At AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, Will Ospreay defeated Kenny Omega in an instant classic to win the IWGP United States Championship.

The spectacular match has garnered plenty of discussion since the event with fans and critics alike debating whether it was too dangerous or reckless, especially the use of “The Tiger Driver 91” move.

As previously reported, Kenny Omega has addressed his critics in a brand new interview.

Speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Omega compared his approach to professional wrestling to that of WWE Hall of Famer Mike Tyson’s in boxing. He said:

“There are people who want to complain and put themselves on a pedestal by saying what we did was dangerous.”

“Well, you think? So I’ve been asked, why did we do it? It made sense in the match and evoked emotion. And we both knew I would end up coming out of the move unscathed. Is there a risk? Sure. There’s always a risk.”

“Look at the way Mike Tyson boxed. His style was so dangerous, he stayed so close to his opponent. What was he doing boxing in-style? Shouldn’t he have fought more stick-and-move and waited for the counterpunch? Wouldn’t that have been better for his brain? Didn’t he understand how dangerous it was? But that’s what made him Mike Tyson.”

Kenny Omega will now move on to team with the debuting Kota Ibushi and The Elite’s Hangman Adam Page and The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) on the July 19 edition of AEW Dynamite.

The Golden Elite will face Blackpool Combat Club’s Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta, Claudio Castagnoli, Konosuke Takeshita and the returning PAC in the Blood and Guts match next Wednesday.
