ROH Television Title Match

Before this one gets underway, Thunder Rosa is backstage. She’ll be facing Nyla Rose on Saturday at Battle of the Belts. Rose brings her a cake to celebrate Thunder Rosa have a day named after her. Rosa pushes it into Rose’s face. There’s no better way to build a women’s match that someone getting slammed into a cake. (Insert massive eye roll here)

Joe comes out first to Bobby Cruise’s announcing him. Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt are ringside. Clearly, they are getting involved. Lethal has a gift of some kind. Out next is Minoru Suzuki. Will he get to hear his whole song?

I’m glad Tony Khan bought ROH and it’s not just being sucked into WWE’s library. However, AEW’s roster was big enough that we don’t need so much crossover on Dynamite.

That being said, this is fun. Fighting spirit slaps and chops to get us started. Both men’s chests are tomato red after they just beat the ever-loving hell out of each other.  Only chops, forearms, and slaps through the first five minutes. They go to picture in picture and the slap fight continues. Eventually, Suzuki locks in a submission move. Wow…3 moves and it is incredible.

The final few minutes sees Joe go for the Muscle Buster. He can’t get it. Suzuki locks in a triangle. Joe escapes and gets the Muscle Buster after all. Joe gets the pin. He’s the new ROH Television Champion. Jay Lethal congratulates Joe with Dutt. He opens the gift and it’s his finger in a box. The lights go out and it’s some big dude. Satnam Singh is here. I have no idea who this guy is, but he’s huge.

Lethal, Singh, and Dutt beat the hell out of Joe. I guess ROH has a new faction or AEW or both. Who knows at this point.

This was a really good Dynamite. 4 really good matches. The angle at the end didn’t get over, but the match sure did.

Keith Lee, Swerve, Starks and Hobbs

I know everyone loves Swerve and Lee, but if I’m AEW, I’m giving the win to Starks and Hobbs. Hobbs is wrestling in New Orleans where he grew up until Hurricane Katrina. The crowd goes nuts for him. Having Starks win would be nice for the homegrown talent. Plus, Hobbs is going to need to change his name to Jobbs if he keeps losing.

Hobbs starts off using his strength against Swerve. When he tags in Starks, things heat up. Swerve starts mounting a comeback and at one point, Swerve dives onto both men on the outside, but he launched himself off of Keith Lee’s chest.

Swerve goes for a big move, but Starks hits a spear out of nowhere. He follows up by knocking Lee off the apron. He then hits a flipping DDT that was Canadian Destroyer-like. At one point, Swerve launches Starks into a pounce. That was sweet. Starks went for a suplex on Lee for some reason. The match gets to chaotic to keep up with at this point.

Lee and Hobbs go at it. Lee goes for a pounce, but Taz grabs the foot. This allows Hobbs to hit the huge Spine Buster. Hobbs pins Lee. Yes!!! That’s awesome.

The AEW guys needed a win. I’m sure Lee and Swerve will get their wins back, but AEW has given a lot to the WWE guys when they come in. Some of these AEW guys need to stand tall to balance it out.

Hey, it is the ladies

Marina Shafir is here to battle with Skye Blue. Shafir is the next challenger for Jade Cargill. The commentary team is really trying to put Shafir over as a real threat based on her MMA and judo background. Shafir wins easily. She wins with a triangle choke.

During the match, Shafir spends a lot of time staring at the Baddy section. Oddly, Kiera Hogan and Red Velvet have joined the Cargill Baddy Section. We also see Cargill not watching the television while Shafir is wrestling. She isn’t taking her seriously in spite of Mark Sterling warning her this is a real threat.

Shafir may get a surprise victory, but they’ve done nothing to build her up on shows people actually watch. She’s never had a match until tonight on either Dynamite or Rampage. She needs to have had a few matches for people to care about her. Of course, giving your women 5 minutes of television time isn’t going to allow for that. Thunder Rosa’s feud is sputtering. Cargill is a star but hasn’t had an actual feud to get involved in. Serena Deeb was on a roll but we haven’t seen her in a while. Toni Storm and Hayter are getting a bit of a build. Baker hasn’t been seen. They have talent, but they have to give them stories we can sink our teeth in.

We get backstage segments featuring Lambert, Sky, and Page. They talk some trash about Sammy and Tay. They’ll be facing each other at Battle of the Belts.

A 6-man tag

Eddie Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz are fighting Jericho, Garcia, and Hager. Jericho gives Santana the middle finger and Santana punches him in the face. Nice opening.

This match is chaotic like all trios matches are. Kingston amps up the intensity when he gets in. Kingston’s crew are brawlers. On Jericho’s side, Garcia and Hager are true wrestlers. That is a bit goofy given the nature of Jericho’s sports entertainment schtick. I guess that makes it even more absurd. Maybe that’s the point.

Matt and Angelo come down during the match. Ortiz takes them out with a suicide dive. Garcia and Kinston were left to fight in the middle of the ring. Garcia whipped Kingston into the ropes. Jericho drills him with a bat. Garcia gets the pin.

After the match, the 5 members of the JAS take out Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz. It’s 5 on 3. Kingston needs two more guys. Lucha Bros?

After the match, MJF is backstage. He is hot and fired up. He has Mark Sterling backstage. It’s revealed that MJF can book anyone against Wardlow as part of his contract. He chooses the Butcher.

MJF vs. Shawn Dean

Up next is MJF and Shawn Dean. I’m sure Wardlow will show up during this one. MJF has Shawn Spears here. Shawn Dean is dressed for war.

Prior to the match, Jamie Hayter and Toni Storm have another no contact segment. They will be facing off in the first round of the Owen Tournament. Hayter talks a lot of trash. Toni Storm just walks away with a smirk.

Back to the match, MJF acts like he can’t get his jacket off. Spears helps distract Dean before the match. MJF is able to attack from behind. About 30 seconds into the match, the big screen shows security laid out. The crowd is chanting we want Wardlow. They are getting this guy over.

MJF and Dean head outside. MJF takes out Shawn Dean. MJF is very happy with himself. He leans against the barricade and who should show up behind him. Yep. Wardlow. MJF hightails it out of there. Spears tries to help by hitting him with a chair. It isn’t effective.

Security heads out. It’s about 30 guys. Wardlow takes a few out. While all this is going on, Dean is back in the ring and the ref is making the 10 count. MJF tries to pay the ref off, but he finishes the count and MJF loses by count-out. Dean now has the first DQ and Count-out wins on Dynamite. That will be a great trivia question one day.

As Wardlow is escorted out, he screams that he won’t stop until he’s released from the MJF contract. MJF is furious. This feud seems like a big step down from CM Punk, but the build has been quite good.

We get a video from Darby Allin. Allin wants a coffin match against Andrade El Idolo.

Tag Title Match

ReDRagon is taking on Jurassic Express. I think the story we’re heading towards at some point will be The Young Bucks and ReDRagon. So, will tonight be the night AEW moves in that direction? I also get the feeling Jungle Boy is heading towards a singles run. I just feel a title change coming soon.

I don’t know why it triggers me so much, but JR insisting on calling Luchasaurus a big lizard in the green mask annoys the crap out of me. He’s a freaking dinosaur JR, not a lizard.

During the match, Jungle Boy gets worked over. Luchasaurus gets a hot tag and does his big offensive moves. Meanwhile, ReDRagon does what they do best: combination offense. ReDRagon pulls out a new combination. Kyle locks in a front guillotine. Meanwhile, Fish hits an Avalanche Falcon Arrow over the top of Kyle. Fish would have had the win, but Luchasaurus throws himself and Kyle on Fish to break up the pin.

After this, Jurassic Express hits the Thoracic Express for the win. Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus pull out the win after a very competitive match. After the match, ReDRagon attack with a chair. As they head back up the ramp, FTR walk out and get in ReDRagon’s faces. They start shoving each other. That would be a fun program.

Backstage, The Blackpool Combat Club is talking about their upcoming match with the Gunn Club. It’s a trios match and the 3rd member of the BCC is officially Wheeler Yuta. He even has a t-shirt.

CM Punk vs. Penta

AEW is opening with a big match and the crowd seems hyped tonight. CM is taking on PENTA. I absolutely love Penta, but this PENTA OSCURO character and Alex the Vampire is not my favorite version of them. You’d have to say The Lucha Bros might not have been used to their maximum potential especially of late. Their title run wasn’t the most effective.

The crowd is hyped for this one. Dueling CM Punk and Zero Miedo chants to start. The match starts on fire. The two guys slap each other about 7000 times. Then they trade punches. The match goes on with CM Punk breaking out some offense we haven’t seen from him in a while. He even did a springboard backflip to get out of an arm wrench.

Aside from his matches with MJF, this looks like a more energized Punk. At one point both men trade submissions. Then they go to the apron and they both fake dropping the other on their head.

CM Punk goes for the GTS. Penta blocks it. He goes for the arm breaker. In the end, CM Punk gets the win with the GTS. During the match, CM Punk gets his knee worked over. This match was a banger and a great way to open the show.

We then cut to a video package of the Jericho Appreciation Society arriving via jet. When Jericho and company emerge from the plane, Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz have jumped 2point0.  They even took their shoes.
