RevPro British Heavyweight Championship Match - Zack Sabre Jr. def. Hiroshi Tanahashi (c)
Zack Sabre Jr. came up with a big win by rolling up Hiroshi Tanahashi to regain the RevPro British Heavyweight Championship. Tanahashi continues his less than ideal 2019 with a two week title reign.
You can probably imagine what this match was and you would be correct. However, that does not mean that it was not great. Tanahashi is still one of the very best in the world and Zack Sabre Jr. does what he does better than anyone in the world.
After the match, Zack Sabre Jr. thanked Tanahashi for holding his belt for him. He said that he is going to be the first British IWGP Heavyweight Champion and wants to hold both titles at the same time.
In his backstage interview he revealed that he intends to defend the RevPro British Heavyweight Championship on the first night of Wrestle Kingdom 14 and he wants to be contending for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship on the second night.
Well that does it for us here at WrestleTalk. I hope you enjoyed out continued live coverage of New Japan Pro Wrestling and stick with us for Destruction in Kagoshima tomorrow!
IWGP Tag Team Championship Match - Tama Tonga (c) & Tanga Loa (c) def. Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI
Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa retained the IWGP Tag Team Championships following a distraction from KENTA. It appears that KENTA and Tomohiro Ishii are not finished with their rivalry.
The finish came as a result of what happened at Royal Quest. Then, the Guerrillas of Destiny cost Ishii his NEVER Openweight Championship in a match against KENTA. Here, KENTA repaid the favour.
The match was fine, if not below average per New Japan standards. It was very long and felt cheap due to the distraction finish.
The main event is next.
Tetsuya Naito & EVIL def. Jay White & Chase Owens
Tetsuya Naito pinned Chase Owens after the Destino. Naito and Jay White are embroiled in a rivalry over the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, with their title match taking place at Destruction in Kobe on September 22.
Naito and White have taken a seemingly passive approach to their rivalry with both men taking their time in the ring and emphasizing their poses more than trying to beat one another. Regardless this was another good match.
SANADA, Shingo Takagi & BUSHI def Kazuchika Okada, Hirooki Goto & Rocky Romero
SANADA got the submission win over Rocky Romero to win the match for Los Ingobernables de Japon.
SANADA was booked to look strong as he will face Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at King of Pro Wrestling. Shingo Takagi and Hirooki Goto brawled a lot as they continue their feud as well.
This was a good match but nothing worth going out of your way to see.
KENTA, Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi, El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori def. Kota Ibushi, Will Ospreay, Robbie Eagles, Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma
KENTA hit the Go To Sleep on Tomoaki Honma to win the match for Bullet Club.
There was a lot to this match as KENTA and Kota Ibushi will wrestle tomorrow for Ibushi’s Wrestle Kingdom 14 title shot and El Phantasmo and Taiji Ishimori will defend the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships against Will Ospreay and Robbie Eagles.
This match was good, not surprising considering who was involved.
Jushin Thunder Liger, SHO & YOH def. Minoru Suzuki, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & DOUKI
SHO got the pin on DOUKI after he and YOH hit the 3K. Minoru Suzuki attempted to remove the mask of Jushin Thunder Liger to no avail.
This was a brawl at times, with the Suzuki-Gun members attacking Liger and RP3K on the outside. After the match, Suzuki continued to attack Liger and once again attempted to remove Liger’s mask. Suzuki left and Liger got on the mic and challenged him to a match.
Yuji Nagata, Ryusuke Taguchi, Ren Narita & Yuya Uemura def. Manabu Nakanishi, Toa Henare, Clark Connors & Michael Richards
Ryusuke Taguchi got the victory for his team by submitting Michael Richards with an ankle lock.
This match was a slog to get through at points. The young lions are still inexperienced, Richards in particular, and Manabu Nakanishi really is not very good anymore. The better team definitely won here, as Yuji Nagata and Taguchi were the highlights of the match.
Young Lions Cup Match - Shota Umino def. Alex Coughlin
Shota Umino got the win over Alex Coughlin with a fisherman’s suplex. Umino managed to fight through Coughlin’s Boston Crab before he got the win.
Another very solid match. Umino has incredible potential and showed it here. If any of the young lions are going to be a big star in New Japan I would put my money on Umino.
Young Lions Cup Match - Karl Fredericks def. Yota Tsuji
Karl Fredericks defeated Yota Tsuji with a single-leg Boston Crab. He was selling his shoulder during the whole match but overcame Tsuji by hitting a big spinebuster before locking in the single-leg crab.
This was a fun little match. Nothing spectacular of course, but Fredericks continues to show his immense potential. Fredericks moves to 4-1 in the tournament while Tsuji drops to 1-4.
