An update has emerged on the WWE ‘hiring freeze’, with multiple free agents WWE missed out on now revealed.
It was previously reported that several WWE names indicated that there was a ‘hiring freeze’ in the company, with there being speculation about everything from Vince McMahon’s return to WWE preparing for the sale to Endeavor as reasons.
No main roster hires have been publicly revealed since January 2023, with the exceptions being names that were already signed by the company in 2022.
Several big names have become free agents in recent months, with WWE missing the opportunity to sign several top names.
Per Fightful Select (subscription required), former NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis was told that WWE maintained interest in him, but due to ‘corporate moves’ the company wasn’t making any main roster hires.
Aldis returned to IMPACT Wrestling at the April 16 Rebellion pay-per-view, where he revealed that he had signed with that promotion.
Fightful also revealed that WWE was also in contact with former NXT name and independent standout EJ Nduka via James Kimball, who finished up with WWE earlier this year.
WWE was also reportedly in contact with former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jay White, with Triple H ‘adamant’ he didn’t want details about these talks leaked, per Fightful.
White was officially announced as ‘All Elite’ by Tony Khan following his appearance on the April 5 edition of Dynamite.
There reportedly wasn’t a lot of communication between WWE and White in the weeks leading up to the ex-NJPW star ultimately signing with AEW.
It was also pointed out that WWE had shown interest in NJPW names Hikuleo and Tama Tonga, and the possibility of bringing Trinity Fatu (Naomi) back into the company.
Fatu revealed via an Instagram comment in late-March that she’s no longer with WWE.
With the likes of William Regal and Bruce Prichard reaching out to talent, WWE sources indicated to Fightful that “we haven’t been hiring people, but we’ve been talking to people.”
