New Japan Star in Trouble!

New Japan Star in Trouble!

New Japan Pro Wrestling has announced that disciplinary action will be taken against “Bad Boy” Tama Tonga stemming from his behavior on Twitter. Over the previous few days, the star has been aggressively mocking and attacking critical fans on Twitter.

It was one particular exchange with Roman Reigns that caused controversy, however. After a fan stated their wish for Roman’s ring work to be as good as his promos, Tonga, for no reason whatsoever posted the following comment:

“I wish your bitch ass had a better picture than then the pedophile picture you have now for your Twitter!”

The following picture shows the argument continuing. Please be advised of strong and offensive language.

Responding with haste, NJPW released a statement on njpw1972.com, saying the following:

“NJPW takes actions taken by our wrestlers seriously. In light of recent inappropriate conduct by Tama Tonga including SNS (Social Networking Service) usage, the company has decided to take disciplinary actions against said wrestlers, and will issue updated guidelines to all wrestlers.”

Until now, the promotion has taken a relatively hands-off approach to their wrestler’s social media activity. Issuing stricter guidelines could indicate a significant change to that with the perpetrator getting a temporary ban from Twitter for 12 hours shortly after this exchange. Tama initially mocked his ban calling it #TwitterJail. Though he has since then deleted the tweets aimed at the veteran.

During a recent G1 Climax event, Tama was up to his old tricks, grabbing a fan by the throat. Fraser Marriott of the Super J Cast was sitting near the fan and is reporting that the fan was a real and not a plant. The podcast can be found here.

There have been no details on the exact nature of the disciplinary action or what specific changes will be made to NJPW social media policies going forward. One thing is clear though, disrespect such as this cannot carry on.
