Backstage details have emerged on nixed plans for a confrontation between Cain Velasquez and a former UFC rival at AAA TripleMania Regia.
On his Keepin It 100 podcast, Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide Head of Creative Konnan noted that the promotion was hopeful to book a confrontation between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos for the December 4 show. Konnan explained that these plans were scrapped due to dos Santos’ pre-existing obligations.
ESPN’s Marc Raimondi has since taken to Twitter to note that the pitch involved Dan Lambert of American Top Team appearing with dos Santos, writing:
“I had heard this, too. The pitch was to fly dos Santos and Dan Lambert down to Mexico and JDS would have started a storyline in AAA with his old UFC rival Cain Velasquez. Would have been fun, but dos Santos couldn’t do it.”

Dos Santos notably won the UFC Heavyweight Championship from Velasquez in November 2011, before Velasquez won the title back from dos Santos in December 2012. Velasquez successfully defended the gold against Dos Santos in 2013.
Dos Santos made his wrestling debut in 2019 at AAA TripleMania XXVII. Dos Santos first wrestled on AEW Rampage in October, before featuring in the Minneapolis Street Fight at AEW Full Gear.
At TripleMania Regia on Saturday, Velasquez will team with Psycho Clown and Pagano to face off against LA Park, Rey Escorpión & Taurus.
