The real reason for a botched match finish that took place during last night’s episode of AEW Dynamite has now emerged.
One of the discussion points of last night’s AEW Dynamite was the finish to the match between Shelton Benjamin and Speedball Mike Bailey.
Towards the end of the match, Benjamin nailed Bailey with a kick and went to pin him. Bailey didn’t kick out, but the referee stopped his count at two.
Shortly after, Benjamin struck Bailey with a superkick, pinned him, and this time the referee counted to three.
An explanation for what happened and why the referee stopped at two on the first pin has now been revealed.
Speaking on today’s Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez reported:
“The finish was gonna be a superkick. Shelton ends up shooting him in, and he hits this kick, and Speedball just takes this incredible full flip bump, and it looks like he’s dead.
“So Shelton decides, ‘It ain’t gonna get better than that,’ and so Shelton calls the audible, ‘This is the finish.’
“Apparently the ref didn’t hear him, and so the ref stops the count because that wasn’t actually supposed to be the finish.
“So you could say it’s the referees fault. You could say it’s Shelton’s fault. You can’t say it’s Speedball’s fault, he just laid there like he was supposed to.
“It was a miscommunication, and when the referee stopped, they just went on and did the actual finish.
“He did not get concussed by the kick or anything like that. There was no injury involved. It was just Shelton thought a move looked really cool and that they should just go to the finish right there, and the ref didn’t hear him.”
