Rey Fenix has captured his first championship of his WWE career, winning the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship at Noche de los Grandes.
Since the Lucha Bros both arrived in WWE in early 2025, they have been kept apart, with Rey Fenix being on the SmackDown brand while Penta is on Raw.
As a singles star, Penta has become a major name on the Raw roster, with him capturing his first championship back in March to begin his current reign as Intercontinental Champion.
Fenix however has not found as much immediate success, but he can now also add his first WWE championship to his resume.
Rey Fenix Wins AAA World Cruiserweight Championship
Over the past few weeks in AAA, Rey Fenix has competed in a series of matches with Laredo Kid, with Fenix defeating Laredo Kid in their first encounter in a match that saw fans throw money into the ring at the pair.
However, Laredo Kid would reject Fenix’s offer for respect after the match, leading to him turning heel in their rematch on last week’s AAA show, hitting Fenix with a low blow to retain the title.
Laredo Kid would claim that Fenix is jealous of both he and his own brother Penta for having championships, while he himself has yet to win one in WWE.
After the match, AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio made his first official match, the third encounter between Fenix and Laredo Kid at Noche de los Grandes.
The match kicked off the show, with Fenix defeating Laredo Kid to win the title, his first of his WWE career.
Rey Fenix’s WWE Career Trajectory Compared To Brother Penta
Penta’s WWE career has been a success story from the start when he arrived in January 2025, with him immediately connecting with the fans and eventually winning the Intercontinental Title earlier this year.
Brothers Penta and Rey Fenix were originally supposed to come into WWE together, but because their AEW contracts ended up expiring months apart due to the difference in injury time added on, WWE debuted Penta early and Fenix joined the company in April 2025 instead.
Instead of immediately reuniting the Lucha Brothers, WWE recognized Penta’s momentum and rode with it on Raw, while Fenix debuted on SmackDown.
While he has always been popular, Fenix’s WWE main roster career simply hasn’t reached the same heights as Penta to this point, but this AAA Cruiserweight Title win could change that.
Assuming he appears on SmackDown with the belt, fans will now recognize him as a champion, and as long as the booking holds up, his credibility gets an instant boost.
Plus, with the increasing popularity of AAA – thanks in large part to the success of El Grande Americano and the entertainment value of the weekly show in general – Fenix could see an upward surge of momentum and fan support just from AAA programming, regardless of what happens with him on SmackDown.
Inevitably, at some point down the line, Penta and Fenix will reunite as a tag team, but it’s great to see Fenix getting some of his own success now so he isn’t seen as the ‘lesser’ brother in terms of accomplishments in WWE thus far.
