Scrapped plans for a major celebrity to wrestle in a match with Pat McAfee for WWE has been revealed.
According to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, there were “serious internal discussion” within WWE about having Pat McAfee joining forces with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers to face Adam Cole and Undisputed Era.
At the time, NXT was battling All Elite Wrestling in the Wednesday Night War, so using McAfee and Rodgers in a big time match against Undisputed Era would have made sense to gain fan interest.
McAfee had his debut match for the company at NXT TakeOver 30 against Adam Cole before taking part in the WarGames Match in December 2020.
The former Indianapolis Colts punter was extremely impressive in his two performances and has all kinds of connections from his time in the NFL.
A high-profile match involving Aaron Rodgers would have garnered mainstream notoriety.
Rodgers is the reigning two-time NFL MVP and is widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
McAfee went on to become the SmackDown color commentator alongside Michael Cole and had his main roster debut against Austin Theory and then Vince McMahon at WrestleMania 38 in Dallas on April 3.
