Tony Khan recently asserted that CM Punk wasn’t behind any requests to remove Colt Cabana from AEW, but skeptics remain in the company.
At the AEW Full Gear post-event media scrum, Khan had been asked about booking Colt Cabana and to clarify whether CM Punk had requested to have Cabana removed from AEW.
Shortly after Punk made his debut, Cabana had disappeared from AEW TV and was on the verge of a contract expiry before he was signed to an ROH deal instead.
Khan has since explained that Cabana’s booking (to return and face Chris Jericho with Punk now seemingly out of the company) was due to his ROH history and that Cabana was ‘a great babyface’.
He would state that CM Punk did not make any requests to remove Colt Cabana from AEW.
Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer addressed Khan’s claims on Wrestling Observer Radio saying:
“The whole Cabana thing, I keep getting stuff from talents in AEW about this.
“Ever since Saturday I’ve gotten a lot and, put it this way, there is a lot of talent that is very convinced of one thing.
“Obviously CM Punk is – and he’s always been – very adamant that he had nothing to do with it.
“Tony said that (Punk) had nothing to do with it, this was back in August, so that story is not going to change publicly one way or the other.”

Khan sticking to his story hasn’t quelled the skepticism behind the scenes at AEW, with Meltzer further stating:
“But I’m just saying that the skepticism, and it’s vehement from a lot of people, as far as the skepticism of that story.
“So it’s not like that thing has been settled in the eyes of, I can’t say all the talent, but a lot of the talent.
“Even today I just got something that was just like, ‘Can’t you just see? Isn’t it obvious?’.
“It’s not like they’re speculating, they believe that they know the story.
“That’s basically that, I’m sure that one will never go away.”

With CM Punk’s locker room reputation largely in tatters, especially with a report that Chris Jericho described him ‘a cancer’ backstage, there’s no love lost between many in AEW and Punk, with Meltzer explaining:
“There’s people who… it’s not like everyone in that dressing room is totally on that side, but there’s a lot of people who are very vehement on why he should not be allowed back.
“I think he probably won’t be, and he’s still under contract…”

Punk looks to be out of AEW, but The Elite – Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks – who Punk was said have had a fight with backstage after All Out, have made their returns
During the return episode of the ‘Being The Elite’ YouTube show following its hiatus after the All Out incident, time was taken to emphasise the “f**k CM Punk” chants during The Elite’s trios match against Death Triangle at Full Gear.
AEW announced a best of seven series between The Elite and Death Triangle, with the Full Gear match counting as the first win the Death Triangle, and the second match taking place in Punk’s hometown of Chicaco on Dynamite this week (November 23).
