Update On Possibility Of CM Punk Joining NJPW AEW

Rocky Romero has floated the idea of CM Punk in NJPW at a ‘big show’ and believes Tony Khan wouldn’t have a problem with it.

CM Punk was fired from AEW on September 2 after an investigation into events that took place backstage at AEW All In on August 27, 2023.

The backstage altercation at the Wembley Stadium, London, England show would also see Jack Perry placed on indefinite suspension.

Tony Khan stated days after All In that he felt that his “life was in danger“.

With CM Punk’s name being thrown around for possible runs in WWE and TNA/Impact Wrestling, Rocky Romero has suggested a position for him in NJPW.

Speaking to Fightful, Romero shared his thoughts on a Punk run and its benefits to New Japan, saying:

“You never know. Obviously, we didn’t really get to do many crossovers when Punk was with AEW. There was supposed to be that Tanahashi and Punk match that never happened.

“I think Punk coming and doing Wrestle Kingdom or a big show like that could be, I think, great for our product.

“Obviously, getting fresh eyes and everything that he brings to merchandise and everything else.

“I wouldn’t be opposed to it at all.”

With NJPW and AEW having a strong working relationship and, Romero also gave his thoughts on how such an arrangement would be received by Tony Khan, concluding:

“I know Tony pretty well. I would probably give him the heads up like, ‘Hey, this is what’s going on,’ but I don’t think he would have much to say about it.

“It’s another company. He doesn’t own New Japan, and even though we have a great partnership, I think it’s fine and he’d be cool with it and AEW would be cool with it.”

As for AEW, it was recently reported that CM Punk was among the top merch sellers for his former home.
