Update On How Often NXT Releases Could Be Happening WWE

A backstage update has emerged on how often NXT & WWE Performance Center releases could be happening moving forward.

10 names from the developmental brand were let go by WWE on Friday (April 29), including Dakota Kai and Dexter Lumis.

Per Dave Meltzer on the Sunday Night’s Main Event podcast, it appears that WWE will be releasing developmental names after 90 days if they haven’t made significant progress by then.

Commenting on the future of the brand, Meltzer said:

“I think we are going to be seeing more and more of this when it comes to NXT is people they are just gonna make decisions that they are bringing a lot of new people in. If you don’t make progress there, they are gonna get rid of you, in most cases.

“There were a few cases where that wasn’t the case. That’s what it was and even talking to people who were down there and were around there were kind of like ‘ well, they weren’t making the progress (that was) hoped for’ and they have all these tryouts and they bring in a whole new group of people and there’s gonna be 90-day cycles where they bring in new people and other people are gone.

“Obviously, Dexter Lumis and Dakota Kai and Malcolm Bivens don’t fit into that category…Harland – there were people because of his size and the fact that he’d been on TV and everything like that, were surprised but they took him off TV two weeks ago for no reason and I thought that’s never a good sign.”

Going into more detail on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer noted:

“The two things are that if they’re pushing you to sign a contract and you don’t sign a contract, even though you may have lots of time left, and you’re in NXT, not main roster, but you’re in NXT, perhaps it’s a message that, ‘You better sign your contract, and if you’re unhappy, we’ll just let you go’.

“And the other message is that, ‘We’re constantly bringing in new guys, constantly’. So if you go in there and you’re improving at a good clip, then you’re okay. But if you don’t show improvement quickly – you’ve pretty much got 90 days in a lot of cases, if you’re a new person.

“There are some new people who are getting multi-year contracts and there are some that are getting 90-day deals. But the reality is even if you’re getting a multi-year contract, it’s still really a 90-day deal. It’s very very competitive, dog eat dog, and if you don’t show great improvement in 90 days – and not everyone will – you’re probably not gonna be long for the company. That’s pretty much the message there.”

It had been reported that WWE coaches and people backstage felt Harland wasn’t progressing enough prior to his release.

There are some in WWE who also reportedly believe that more cuts are on the way, which you can read more about right here.
