Vince McMahon Allegedly Had Plans For A Violent Stipulation Match In WWE WWE

Had things gone to plan, WWE fans could have seen a first for the company with an exploding barbed wire deathmatch.

Speaking on The Insiders podcast (subscription required), former WWE writer Court Bauer took us back to the beginning of the thought process, saying:

“I wanted to do a deathmatch, an exploding deathmatch in WWE

“There’s a time when [it was like] ‘let’s try and rewatch ECW, let’s try different stuff.’

“So I showed Vince an Onita death match. And he said ‘yeah, let’s do it’.”

It wasn’t as simple as just getting the nod from McMahon, though, as Bauer explains:

“And from there, they said, ‘Okay, get with Kevin Dunn and his team and let’s get to work on it.’

“I wasn’t the lead writer.

“I would just suggest to one of the writers in the room.

“It’s a win for me, Vince liked an idea.”

From there, Bauer explained the process that led to the writers’ room, saying:

“So we’ll circle back and that’s the lead writer’s job to kind of communicate with KD and his team on whatever that project is.

So Alex Greenfield is the head writer of Smackdown at the time.”

Alex Greenfield was WWE SmackDown’s head writer between 2005 and 2007 and things weren’t plain sailing for Bauer’s grand plan during this time, as he says of Alex:

“He tries to keep in contact with KD’s team, he’s not getting the clear answers.

“And he’s like, ‘Hey, we get pictures from our mockups. What do you need from our end? Do you need anything? Here’s the video.'”

When the answers did come, what was presented wasn’t what had been envisioned with Baeur describing the construction as:

“action place that comes to life”

An action place that would eventually go on to the grounds for The Undertaker vs Big Show in the Punjabi Prison match at The Great American Bash in 2006.
