Vince McMahon Recalls Promoters Meeting About Killing Him For Invading Their Territories

During his appearance on the Pat McAfee show today, Vince McMahon taught us just how serious wrestling promoters were in the territory days.

Before Vince McMahon took over the world, it was very much a case of promoters having their own territory, and it was a big problem if another promoter tried to run a show there.

Vince being Vince, this didn’t really deter him, but it did lead to the other promoters wanting to, well, get rid of him.

Recalling a story told to him by Jim Ross, McMahon said:

“There’s a story that Jim Ross was telling me one day. And he was with Bill Watts and some of the other old NWA guys, and they’re having this conference and there’s a whole bunch of them – ‘What are we gonna do about this kid that’s invading everything? Gotta do something about him’.”

Vince then said that, while those promoters weren’t exactly fond of each other, they collectively hated him enough to get their heads together. He continued:

“Yeah, I was the gel (bonding them together). So, they’re meeting in terms of what can they possibly do. So now, Jim is not part of the meeting, but Jim is now in the men’s room. And he’s in the men’s room in the stall taking care of business – in walks four of the most prominent promoters. And they’re talking about how they’re gonna off me. ‘This guy knows this guy, I know I can do this, this guy did this, it was really impressive’ – they all know people. So they’re all talking about who was gonna off me.”

You might be thinking “poor Vince”, but spare a thought for Jim Ross in this situation too. McMahon added:

“So imagine Jim Ross. He’s on the throne, he hears this, it’s like, ‘Oh no, I’m gonna be accessory to murder’. So he takes one foot and puts it on the seat, takes the other one, puts it on the seat, so now they can’t see his feet below the stall. And of course mother nature is calling at the same time. So finally he waited for them to finish off, who was gonna kill me, and all that kinda crap. But that’s just one of those things.”
