UPDATE: A correction on William Regal’s AEW contract status has emerged – read more at this link.
An update on William Regal’s current AEW contract, following speculation that the wrestling veteran is preparing to return to WWE.
William Regal was let go by WWE in January, after over two decades with the company.
The popular name made his AEW debut at the March 6 Revolution pay-per-view, forcing Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley to shake hands, marking the beginning of the Blackpool Combat Club.
After turning on Jon Moxley during the AEW World Championship bout at the November 19 Full Gear pay-per-view, some speculated that AEW is preparing to write Regal off TV, ahead of a potential departure from the company.
The AEW to WWE defection rumors were recently fuelled by Triple H, who publicly paid tribute to William Regal ahead of Survivor Series WarGames, noting that the show wouldn’t be the same without Regal shouting about the titular match stipulation.
Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the belief is that Regal signed a one-year deal with the company.
When asked about the possibility of Regal heading back to WWE, Meltzer said:
“I would just say that when his contract is up, it wouldn’t surprise me. Tony (Khan) could make him a better offer and all that, but… it is certainly something that has been discussed.
“His contract is not up for a long time. I think it was only a one-year deal. I don’t want to give the date, I was told a date. It was still months away, several months away.
“He’s not going back this week (is what I’m saying), unless Tony lets him out of his contract.
“Put it this way, it’s certainly a story that’s up in the air, it’s not a non-story.”

If Regal signed a one year deal on the night he made his AEW debut, that would mean that his contract is set to expire in early-March.
It is possible however that Regal didn’t put pen to paper on a full-time deal until a date after Revolution 2022.
