Sami Zayn WWE Update Following Undisputed Championship Loss To CM Punk

An update has emerged on how WWE views Sami Zayn, following his Undisputed Championship reign coming to an end after just nine days.

Sami Zayn reached the top of the mountain in WWE at Night of Champions on June 27, defeating Cody Rhodes and GUNTHER in three-way action to become Undisputed WWE Champion.

Zayn is no longer WWE Champion, losing the gold to a returning CM Punk on the July 6 edition of Monday Night Raw.

Per Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE doesn’t currently see Sami Zayn as one of the company’s “money players”.

Meltzer explained:

“In the past, absolutely, there were times where they were passing around (world championships). They really aren’t passing around belts now, they really are in the hands of the people who, the perception is, are the money players, and Sami is not, in their mind, one of those people.

“He could have been. There was a time where he was, but even then, in their minds, he still wasn’t.

“They’re still all brainwashed by the cosmetics in a lot of ways, and that certain people are good hands, but can’t be ‘the guy’. Sami is one of those guys in their minds, that can’t be the guy.”

Becky Lynch took to social media following the bout to state that Sami Zayn had been “robbed”, a sentiment echoed by much of the fanbase following the title change.

Meltzer’s comments should lead to some interesting conversations about the company taking risks. While we’re often told on commentary that “anything can happen”, in reality we are seeing a lot of the same names in the world title pictures.

Sami Zayn becoming WWE Champion initially appeared to be a step in the right direction, with it being refreshing to see someone new in the main event scene.

While World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns and WWE Champion CM Punk are both incredibly talented, fans have seen these stars hold world titles in WWE numerous times before.

The WWE product would be a lot more unpredictable if we had more stars follow in Zayn’s footsteps and become legitimate world title contenders.

While fans are hoping that this isn’t the end of Main Event Sami Zayn, we’ll just have to wait and see what’s next for the now-former Undisputed WWE Champion.
