An injured WWE AAA star who was set to compete on the June 30 episode of NXT has confirmed they are set to undergo surgery.

Last week’s WWE NXT would have seen El Hijo del Vikingo defend the AAA Latin American Championship against EK Prosper, only for the match to be canceled due to an injury suffered during rehearsals.

With a report that Vikingo’s injury “could be serious“, the star has confirmed that he will be undergoing surgery on Tuesday (July 7).

Sharing an update on Instagram, Vikingo stated (translated from Spanish):

“Have your way, Lord, not my way.

“Family, tomorrow Mr HDLV goes into surgery. Thanks for your support.

“A grateful heart weighs less “Gratitude” Thanks for the support and attention @dorianroldanaaa, @wwe, @luchalibreaaa, @wwenxt

“Thanks to my wife for always being there in good and bad times. I love you very much.”

Vikingo would also thank WWE AAA referee Felix Fernandez for his support.

Although sidelined ahead of last week’s NXT, Vikingo competed on the July 3 episode of WWE SmackDown, losing to AAA World Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix, with that match pre-taped on Monday.

WrestleTalk wishes El Hijo del Vikingo well in his recovery from injury and the rehabilitation journey ahead.

Setback To Comeback

Not for the first time, Vikingo has been sidelined through injury, having suffered a torn meniscus and ligament damage to his right knee back in 2024, which saw him out of action for an extended period.

With Vikingo back on crutches and now undergoing surgery, there’s little doubt that he will be out of action for an extended stretch again, particularly with the previous report suggesting that it could “be serious”.

A top AAA star, Vikingo is an outlier on the roster, signed directly to a WWE contract, while his fellow stars are signed to FILLIP, the entity that co-owns the holding company that controls AAA alongside TKO.

WWE, having acquired AAA over WrestleMania 41 weekend last year, no doubt has plans for Vikingo that stretch beyond his work in AAA.

He may no longer be the AAA Mega Champion, having lost the title to Dominik Mysterio at Worlds Collide in September of last year and being unable to challenge for the title after his loss at March’s Rey de Reyes, but there’s arguably plenty that the pair could continue to do without the title in the picture.

The AAA World Cruiserweight Championship match on SmackDown could have been the start of something new onn the Friday night brand, formally introducing the star to the fans and setting him on a main roster program, only to be cut short by injury before he made his NXT debut.
