WWE Star Addresses Questioning Triple H About Creative Decision: ‘I Think I Made Him Feel Awful’

A WWE star has revealed that he may have made Triple ‘feel awful’ over a creative decision made at a PLE earlier this year.

The Royal Rumble PLE back in January saw GUNTHER bring an end to the in-ring career of AJ Styles. The Ring General ultimately pulled double duty, also entering the Royal Rumble match and finishing as a runner-up to Roman Reigns.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, AJ Styles would give an insight into his thoughts when he found out that GUNTHER would be in the Royal Rumble match having retired him.

Noting that he questioned Triple H directly about this decision, Styles said:

“I just was questioning everything… Even the moment where I found out GUNTHER was in the Royal Rumble, and I think that it already had been explained that he was in the Royal Rumble, and that I got this match, but I was like, ‘What the freak?’

“I think I made Triple H feel awful, ‘Oh man, I didn’t think about that.’ The reality is, nobody thought about that, nobody did, nobody cared, even when GUNTHER came out at the Royal Rumble and got beat.

“In fact, it should have made more sense that he got beat, because he was in the ring with AJ Styles, he got exhausted in that match, of course he’s not going to win the Royal Rumble.

“I just got weird, man. So, my apologies to everyone who I acted that way to, I was just in a weird state of mind.”

GUNTHER would enter the men’s Royal Rumble as entrant number 30, eliminating Penta and Randy Orton before being thrown over the top rope by Roman Reigns, who became a two-time victor at the key PLE.

A Win Becomes A Loss

Much could be made, from a storyline perspective, of GUNTHER being unable to win the men’s Royal Rumble. He had, after all, competed against AJ Styles earlier that evening in an intense showing at the Riyadh Season Stadium in Saudi Arabia.

For AJ Styles to suggest that Triple H “didn’t think about that” is quite the statement when it comes to the WWE Chief Content Officer, a man with creative control over the product. The executive has previously commented, “there’s so many factors” involved in any particular creative process that it should come as little surprise that, on occasion, something that may seem obvious could slip through the cracks.

Not only does WWE creative have to handle the story as it is told, but there’s also a necessity to react in real-time to injuries that could see a star sidelined, regardless of what may have been planned for them over the coming months.

GUNTHER entering at number 30 in the men’s Royal Rumble match saw him step into the ring close to an hour after his victory over Styles, and to see him share the spotlight with Roman Reigns, the eventual winner, is a tantalizing prospect for a future program, should the tides of WWE creative head that way.
