AJ Styles Addresses Possible In-Ring WWE Return

AJ Styles has addressed the possibility of “one more match”, having retired as a WWE star earlier this year with a loss to GUNTHER.

Inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2026, AJ Styles remains with the company in a behind-the-scenes role as a coach and mentor.

With his last match taking place at the WWE Royal Rumble back in January, Styles was asked if he misses being in the ring during a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, with the star saying:

“I don’t miss falling down, I don’t miss getting hurt, I don’t miss any of that, but you’re always going to miss that part of the excitement that you’re about to go to the ring and have a great match.

“You’re going to miss that, that’s just the high you don’t get from anything else.

“But again, I get to go down the Performance Center and scratch that itch and just throw myself into helping these performers down at the PC get better.”

Asked if he was “done-done”, with Van Vliet commenting on the way that retirement in wrestling works, Styles hinted that he could have one more match somewhere down the line, responding:

“That’s right, but I have said this before, and I’ll say it again. Usually we’re granted one comeback for one match. I’m not saying it’s gonna happen. I’m just saying usually it’s granted. Never say never.”

The WWE Hall of Famer has recently seen his own son, Avery Styles, embark on the start of his wrestling journey and addressed the possibility of a tryout in the young star’s future.

“One More Match”

Whether it’s the fans chanting for John Cena to have “one more match” or the very suggestion of the possibility in an interview such as the one referenced above, there’s definitely an interest in seeing retired stars step back into the squared circle again.

WWE stars have even suggested facing veterans of the business in such a confrontation, with Trick Williams challenging Booker T as just one recent example.

Bringing a veteran star out of retirement for “one more match” is sure to give a nostalgia pop to the fans, and a swansong for the name involved, Even Ric Flair, who competed in his highly publicized “Last Match” in July 2022 has shared the possibility of stepping back into the ring.

Whether there’s an appetite for any particular retired star to compete again depends on the sensibilities of the time in which it happens. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, but time takes its toll and the star that may return to the ring isn’t likely to be the one remembered from their heyday.
