Chris Jericho shocked the wrestling world by appearing at the All Elite Wrestling “Double or Nothing” Rally on Tuesday (January 8) to announce that he had signed with the company.
The fact that he signed wasn’t the shock, as many had expected him to at some point, it was more that most people thought that he would be holding off on doing so after his NJPW contract expired following Wrestle Kingdom 13.
WWE were certainly very happy and not bitter to see him at the rally, and they proved it by removing him from the opening credits for all their shows and from parts of WWE.com
According to Dave Meltzer however, Jericho’s deal with AEW is not exclusive as Y2J still has his heart set on a match with new IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi. Jericho lost his IWGP Intercontinental Championship to Tetsuya Naito at Wrestle Kingdom, but it looks like he will be Tanahashi’s next major title contender.
We reported earlier this week that New Japan were reconsidering their decision not to work with AEW after Kenny Omega, who is widely expected to join Cody and the Young Bucks, revealed he was leaving NJPW. The promotion is said to be “desperate” to keep Omega, and it is now thought that holding onto the services of Chris Jericho may also persuade New Japan to think again.
