WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels was retired at WrestleMania XXVI after being bested by The Undertaker in an equally emotional and sensational encounter. Michaels would actually stay retired from 2010-2018, which is rare feat in itself, but the ”Heartbreak Kid” teamed with Triple H to take on The Undertaker and Kane at Crown Jewel in a surreal moment.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Shawn revealed that he had an ‘out-clause’ in case he decided to change his mind. The four-time World Champion said on the issue in his retirement: ”I don’t know that I ever completely decided that it was going to be it [for my career] until after that match was over. We had always sort of discussed sort of an ‘out clause,’ so to speak, if I had the desire to do it again.”
Michaels could go on to add ”but I can remember myself, and ‘Taker, and Michael Hayes just sitting there after the match, like we had done the year before, just the three of us, sort of sitting there, alone, taking it in, and I said, ‘You know something, guys? I feel good with that.’”
This is an interesting revelation from Michaels, and we aren’t sure if something like this is commonplace in WWE for retiring superstars. Perhaps Michaels even activated the ‘out-clause’ for his tag match in Saudi Arabia. Michaels was the stand-out in the match and showed very little ring-rust, and it remains to be seen if Michaels will make yet another return to in-ring competition.
