New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) held a special press conference earlier today to announce a brand new US-based subsidiary called New Japan Pro Wrestling of America.
NJPW CEO Takami Obari stated that the promotion has been hunting for talent for a long time, and that they had already run several very successful shows on American soil, which led to this decision.
Obari highlighted that live shows will be a key factor of the new promotion, and that he feels that the NJPW brand and style is very much appreciated in America already.
The main geographical focus of the shows will be the US west coast, as well as the south east, Texas and midwest areas. Obari wanted it to be clear that none of this will detract from the Japanese based promotion, and instead hopes this will simply attract more fans and aid talent relations.
It was mentioned that Japanese and US tours could run simultaneously, but that they will start between Japanese tours so as to avoid schedule conflicts. There is a possibility of nearly 30 NJPW shows in the next year, double what US fans currently receive.
There are plans to air the shows live on New Japan World, and Obari also mentioned the promotion’s close relationship with AXS, which suggests shows could also be shown on the network.
NJPW has previously worked alongside Ring of Honor in the States, but it seems that this will be a completely separate venture.
