A former WWE star who was released last month has said that he was planned to win the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 35.
Speaking with Fightful, Lio Rush, who was paired with Bobby Lashley who was the IC Champion at the time, said that at one point plan was actually for him to win the strap from the ‘All Mighty’ on the biggest show of the year.
Rush said:
“People are gonna like this, but at the same time, they’re not, because I remember a lot of people were saying it. At the time, they were going to have me win the Intercontinental Championship while I was with Bobby and the whole storyline with Finn [Balor]. They were gonna have me win the title. But I forgot what happened. I forgot what happened and why that wasn’t the case. I think the idea came from Elimination Chamber, where it was me and Bobby versus Finn in like a handicap match and I think they were going to do it again at WrestleMania but I was gonna be the one to win the title and it was just gonna throw everybody off. But yeah, for whatever reason, that got scratched.”
Rush’s run as Lashley’s mouthpiece was beneficial for both in general – it got Rush on main roster TV and meant Lashley didn’t have to faff about with his sisters and all that nonsense anymore.
However, Rush ended up splitting from Lashley and being moved back to NXT as part of the cruiserweight division, where he did go on to win the NXT Cruiserweight Championship from Drew Gulak, his only title in WWE before his release.
