Becky Lynch is one of the most popular stars WWE has produced in modern times, but not everyone backstage seemed to share that idea.
In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Stephanie McMahon discussed Lynch’s ascent to the top of WWE, which included her winning both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships in the main event of WrestleMania in 2019.
McMahon noted that Lynch’s ‘The Man’ moniker went some way to helping her reach that level of popularity, but not everyone backstage was on board. She said:
“(‘The Man) really was was her idea. It’s funny because some women were very against it like, ‘Why do you have to call yourself the man? Why can’t you be The Woman.’
“But she just didn’t take it, you know, too literally. The whole point was to turn that nomenclature on its ear, right, because everyone says, ‘oh the biggest, the most successful person in the room is The Man. Well, why can’t The Man be a woman?”
Becky Lynch remained the Raw Women’s Champion from WrestleMania 35 until the May 11, 2020 episode of Raw when she relinquished it after announcing her pregnancy.
Her and fiancé, fellow WWE star, Seth Rollins are expecting their first child this coming December.
