Just one week after The Fiend captured the WWE Universal Championship, he has lost it. In his first match since before WrestleMania, Roman Reigns has won the Universal title at Payback.
The match was a bizarre one. Braun Strowman attacked ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt before the bell, leading to the two brawling around ringside. There was no shortage of carnage with both being thrown through tables. As things began to wrap up, Wyatt Superplexed Strowman and broke the ring. This is when Reigns made his entrance with Paul Heyman.
Reigns clubbed Strowman with a chair repeatedly and hit Wyatt with a low blow. He then hit Strowman with a Spear to win the match and the title. Reigns is clearly leaning into this heel business, going against everything he had previously stood for. Frankly, it is the most interesting aspect of this show going forward.
This is the first time Reigns has been champion since he relinquished the title in 2018. Since returning from his leukaemia treatment, Reigns had been kept away from the world title picture. That changed when he challenged Goldberg earlier this year, but the match never took place as the pandemic began.
